My daughter will be applying for college this year with a double major in VP and Communications. She will be auditioning with a pre-screening CD (Nov 1st) then auditions in January.
We have a voice coach that will be working with her for the next few months to prepare, a great accompanist and recording studio to work with.

Heres the thing: My daughter has had years and years of musical theatre experience with solos and leads. She had been in a chorale and jazz choir all through-out high school with some solos this past year. Her chorale has performed every year with John Rutter at Carnegie Hall. She does not have much experience with Opera-type solos. She is an alto or soprano II. Does anyone have advice on what colleges are looking for in these auditions
or piece to look at for starters?

The first thing to look at is what the schools she is applying to require for auditions. At this early juncture for a singer they are not looking for complex arias at all, as a matter of fact singing something too complex can be a detriment. Look towards art songs. The Italian 24 can be your friend. Her vocal coach should be able to steer her in the right direction. Provide the coach with the college’s required list.

Is she taking voice lessons with a voice teacher or a vocal coach? A voice teacher will prepare her with her repertoire that suits her skill level and voice and get her classical technique in shape. Even selecting something from the 24 Italian Art Songs should be done with a teacher. Is she interested in classical voice? What are her goals?

You definitely need to go tho the web sites for the schools she is interested in. Note the requirements for each school and the schedule for each. She will need at a minimum something Italian and the art songs are a great place to go for that. She can pick something English but not all schools allow a musical theatre piece for that. The web sites will let you know if that is the case. Some do , some don’t. Some require another piece from another language. Then either French or German art songs are used. She needs to work in whichever languages she is comfortable learning the diction.

The bottom line is that someone who knows her voice should help select the songs.

Do you know which schools support the double major you’ve listed? Music majors have pretty intense schedules that don’t always lend themselves to talking classes in other areas. When we were doing the college search, I was used to the standard academic route from my older child. I was stunned when I looked at the course outline for most of the music schools. I know - not your question, but the school list affects the answers.
