Voice comming out of essay??? WTh?

Ok, I know Stanford wants your voice from essays. But when I talk to people, I usually say "Hey dood, wassssupp!!"

I know this isn't appropriate on the essays...can someone explain what your "voice should show out on your essays" means?

...yes.

Anyway, through your English classes, you should already have a well-formed and developed concept of your own "voice." Your voice is the piece of you that translates into writing. It's crucial as it is YOUR identity and is essential in communicating who you are in your essays.

What about for the essay write a letter to your future roommate, is it ok to start off your letter with some slang that you would usually use with your own friends (Hey dude, Whats up man, etc)?

Yup..''Voice out of essay''...Which means, it should speak of what you are, what you want, where you belong, blabla...in short, it should depict a ''true self''...:)..

basically it means that this should be an essay only you could write. Not as easy as it sounds...

Right. The things that contribute to your voice are your choice of words, what you focus on in your writing, what other language tools you employ (is your language very simple and straight forward? do you use a lot of big words? do you like to use similes and metaphors?), and so on. Voice doesn't necessarily only refer to dialogue.

"Voice" is not really something you can sit down and outline before writing. It'll just come out - hopefully. If you can't tell whether or not your essay sounds like it has a unique voice, ask a friend/teacher/someone to read it. Ask them if it sounds generic, or if it actually reveals something about your character.

can you throw in some expletives? Two maybe? I do that some times...

who are you beyond the paper facts?

how do you think? why did you change the way you think? what can I do right now that will cause you to burst in anger or joy. did you once wanted to empty your mind on a bowl and see what it looks like? is your brain more of a gummy bear or a milkshake? what do you think of the word "why?" if your parachute malfunctioned during sky diving, would you shatter or float?

i think you got my point

thanks!! I see

AshyLOL, you really can't be serious when you ask if you can throw in expletives. They want your voice, but not your warts. You really need to excercise some judgement.

btw, I note that many of the threads in Stanford are started by you, and ask the same question in different ways. You seem to be looking for a formula to get into Stanford - there isn't one.

For the note to be written to a future roommate, do we write informally, or can we say stuff like "totally" (in a slang way) and with a more relaxed style, like we weren't really having it read by an admissions officer?
