Hey everyone, I can't believe it is halfway through senior year! I am a tenor, pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree in voice performance. I applied to Northwestern University, Oberlin College/Conservatory, Indiana University JSOM, University of Cincinnati CCM, University of Michigan, University of Minnesota, and The Juilliard School. I sent in everything to every school in mid november. I have only heard from University of Michigan, Northwestern and Cincinnati. I have live auditions at all three so far, but, I am concerned about when I will hear from the other four schools. I have a friend (soprano), who has already heard about her live audition for Indiana...hmmm, so, I can imagine many other CC'ers are feeling the exact same way...time is going by so slowly, all this waiting for callback auditions, and then the waiting after the audition itself...In your experiences, when have you or your son or daughter heard about acceptances for auditions? Thanks so much, I will keep all of you updated on my college/conservatory journey, and I also want to hear about the process for all of the other prospective music majors on CC! Thanks, have a good holiday everyone!
-Patrick

P.S. Everyone please share your thoughts on the schools I am looking at. What you have and have not liked if you attended or are attending!
Thanks again!

Based on the experience of a couple of my daughter's friends, Oberlin should be getting back to you within two or three weeks. They are currently finishing up with admissions offers based on December early review auditions and will then determine how many additional auditions they want to hear for each voice part and type.

Thanks BassDad! I just found out from a friend of mine who attends Oberlin for voice that she had heard on the 20th of December...we'll see, take care!

In the past Juilliard has sent notices via e-mail at the end of the third week in January to those accepted for auditions, but snail mailed the non-invited. It could be different this year, of course. Typically schools with huge numbers of prescreen recordings may need winter break time for any faculty to have time to listen, and then the staff has to process the resulting invitations. Good luck.

Juilliard sent an email saying that prescreening results "will be sent approximately the third week in January. We ask that you do not call for this information, as pre-screening results will not be given over the phone."

yeah, I just got my email as well. auditioning Feb. 9-10. Cool stuff! COngrats to everyone with auditions/acceptances already and good luck to everyone!

Just wondering, Patrick, what led you to apply to the University of Minnesota? I am deep in the application process myself, looking for a safety school (I live in MN), also applied to Oberlin and Northwestern among others.

hey everyone, I am updating on how the year has been. All of my auditions have gone extremely extremely well!

I have been accepted for a BM in Voice and Opera at: Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, University of Cincinnati-CCM, University of Michigan, and UCLA (I ended up applying and auditioning after working with a professor at youngARTS week in Miami, FL).

I had wonderful auditions at Northwestern University and Oberlin College Conservatory. I won't hear until late March or early april. (These also happen to be tied for first on my list...)

I was not given an audition at Juilliard, but that has worked for the BEST! I'm very happy about not having to audition live there! and as for UMinn, I was accepted to their College of Liberal Arts and sent inall of the requried audition materials to their school of music, but have heard nothing from them at all yet...so, I'm going to forget about Minnesota. It is nice having options! So nice! But, I'm still waiting on my top two choices, and I won't find out about finan. aid or scholarship until late March either...and this plays a huge role for all of us! I wish everyone the best of luck and please share all of your successes. I'm so grateful and thankful for how smoothly and exciting this year has been going! Thanks you guys, take care! update me!

hi Patrick! I'm also a tenor who auditioned at Northwestern University! Did you like the atmosphere there? I wish it wasn't so darn expensive or i'd be all over the school (ok i lied! i'm still all over it haha.)

I'm impressed you got into IU that's quite hard for music! So, congrats a bunch on that one. I'm really nervous to get back NU b/c they said they're accepting <15% this year for music GaHH! oh well. good luck to you and keep up the good work (and when auditions are over, it is the best feeling :D)

Thanks everyone! OMG, are you serious Jeremy, less than 15 percent? AHHHHHHHHHH That makes me WAY WAY nervous! We'll see by april first! EEEEEEEK! I'm still in love with the school, it is one of my top choices! We can only wait now, and I HATE IT! It is amazing to be finished, agreed, Jeremy please keep in touch, and update me on where you get in, I'm sure you'll do amazingly well!

don't stress too much about NU. I'm sure you gave your best effort and that's what important. I also freaked out when I discovered that Oberlin is only accepting 24 singers this year, but it is a competitive environment for the top music schools. However, I was taking a closer look at some of my smaller, less prominent music schools and I realized I could still get as good if not better ed. at them as well.
For example, I was accepted to the Crane school of music and though it isn't Oberlin, the voice faculty there, in particular my would be teacher I think, have impressive backgrounds, such as a BM from Peabody, MM from CCM, and DMA from Wisconsin-Madison. One advantage of a smaller school is that the student faculty ratio will be smaller, so your teacher will have more time to focus and work with you, though this doesn't apply to all the top notch school, such as oberlin, but may apply to NU. Also, it's still possible to be successful starting out from a small school as seen w/ the example of Renee Fleming, who did go to Crane, lol. You have much better choices than Crane anyhow, such as Indiana. Anyway, I wish you luck in pursuit of your studies and in getting those acceptance letters!

p.s. I should introduce myself. senior in high school applying for vocal performance/music education.

I worked alot with the head of the dept, Professor Juliana Gondek while at NFAA Arts week in Florida this past january. I did a late application/audition process for UCLA, and I was notified by her that I had been accepted into the voice program, and that academically I would be fine as long as my GPA was above a 3.0. It is a bit unorthodox, but having the connection with her helped tremendously! She is an amazing teacher.
