My daughter is a HS junior, and will apply to undergraduate programs for classical voice this fall. Her private instructor has suggested schools he thinks are appropriate to her ability (Eastman, U Mich, Northwestern, Rice, Oberlin among others). She was wondering about “safety schools east of the Mississippi” – those programs not at the top of everyone’s list, but good, solid undergraduate-oriented programs. She is interested in places where she would have access to faculty (not being taught by graduate students) and that would help her with graduate school placement as she looks toward a possible career in Opera. She has thought about Catholic University, Hartt, Syracuse, Boston University (which her mentor considers a safety school for her). Your opinions of the voice instruction at these places and suggestions of others for consideration would be helpful as we plan the grand college tour for this spring!
