Can anybody recommend a good, compact recorder for recording class lectures?
Thanks in advance.

don’t do it. Bad idea. First off, you need to ask your profs for permission and these days many are not likely to give it; they don’t their lectures ending up on the internet. Second, look around you in the (college) classroom. Most people are doing just fine taking notes. You should too. Unless, of course, you have some diagnosed learning disability in which case your school will make the necessary arrangements to make recordings for you.

First, you should see if your professors podcasts their lectures–I know that at my university, a lot of professors podcast their own lectures and upload them for students to listen to. If not, then ask your professors over email or on the first day of class if you can record their lectures.

@ mikemac: What works for other people may not be what works for the OP. For me, I can’t just take notes alone, because I’m a slow notetaker and I can’t process auditory information and write it down at the same time. I don’t write down everything the professor says, but you know there’s a problem when I’m writing down something the professor said that was important and forget what was said a few words in (so there are constantly ?? or … indicating gaps in my notes), or I write down the wrong thing–I have listened to my professors’ podcasts before while going over my notes and found that I completely misheard what was actually said.

I can assure you that most students are not “doing just fine taking notes” unless it’s an easy class. If you give them a test or homework problems right after the lecture most students won’t be able to do well - listening to someone talk at you for 50 minutes simply isn’t a good way to learn.

I don’t know of any specialized equipment for recording videos of lectures - if there were it wouldn’t be much different from any other camera out there. Most low budget cameras in the market are pretty much equal to each other, so take your pick. If the professor doesn’t want people recording lectures note that there are a plethora of videos on youtube of other people explaining the same topics - I can even find videos that cover topics in many of my upper division classes. You can also just write down the name of the particular topic the professor is talking about in lecture and afterwards ask the professor or TA about it in office hours.

I am just looking for voice-record, not video. I do have a diagnosed LD and I have a really hard time listening-writing-thinking-understanding at the same time, but recording lectures is not one of the accommodations my college has granted me.

WOW, I misread “voice” as “video.” I really need more sleep…

Check to see if the disability office can arrange for someone to take notes for you.
