voice recorders for lectures

Which one do you use? How much did it cost? Do you find it useful for the class you're recording?

I've never used a voice recorder cause I've never needed one b/c of webcasts/podcasts/Bruincasts. A lot of lectures are recorded and put onto a website available for viewing to those who are enrolled in the class.

Check it out:
http://www.oid.ucla.edu/faculty/bruincast

It is pretty helpful cause there are video and audio downloads that you can view or listen to whenever you want.

i've seen people recording lectures on their macbooks... using word, i think. i don't have word so i don't know how it works, but it looks pretty spiffy. prone to picking noises from typing, though, i'd imagine.

Don't forget the loud ass fan! -_-#

I've never actually seen it happen until this quarter with Villa's 153A. I feel suffocated by the pre-medness.

What about all those LS courses? You usually see an array of like 10-30 of them right on the stage/bench.

LS3 right now w/ Campbell doesn't produce any, actually. I might end up being responsible for one in the near future, tho. A friend told me her study method was just going over recorded lectures, and never even buying the textbook. She has a 3.7 so I'm really inclined to try it out..

Maybe it's because I sit in the very back most of the time. I thought LS3 campbell had some... (I saw some people in the projection room the other day)

In some states it is a crime to tape record without the permission of all parties being recorded. This would include students who speak during class. Many universities have policies that disallow taping.

^ which makes no sense, seeing as how anything said is now in the public domain.

unless you want to get into the whole issue of copyright, which most professors don't, since it hinders the dissemination of academic materials.

in conclusion: no one's gonna care if you tape record things, especially since a lot of profs already do. :)

Voice recording encourages complacency, just flow all notes on a laptop, regardless of class. You'll get better grades, and you'll be more engaged with the material.

don't podcasts discourage students from going to class? so far, i've never had a podcasted class.

^ why should that really matter since they get their money irregardless? at least for the ls lectures there arent any meaningful class participation and if you really have any questions you can just go to that professors OH to ask

That sucks. :(

heh i've had 3 classes videotaped. oh boy did that spoil me!
and yah i never went.
first class- too early
second class- too boring
third class- if i didn't go i'd have 2 days off

sooooo... yah.
