Volleyball and fencing?

I’m an upcoming freshman, and I really want to do a sport next year. I have done both volleyball and fencing for several years. So my question is, does BC have a fencing or volleyball team? How competitive are they? Is it possible to do both? I have never spoken to either coach, so I’m not sure if its even possible to walk on…

Yes, BC has both a fencing and volleyball team. I think I remember hearing somewhere that they will train you for the fencing team even if you don’t have any experience. There was a guy on the fencing team in one of my classes and he missed a few classes but it didn’t seem like a huge time commitment. I don’t really know anything about volleyball but I did go to a game, I’m not sure how competitive they are.

All you have to do is attend the meetings and practices to get on the fencing team. Actually fencing in competitions is a different story.

What do you mean, Miragemage? Is it a competitive team?

I hope its not too big of a time commitment I think I want to do premed!

Here’s a link to last year’s womens fencing roster.

You might know some of those girls. No big names jump out at me, so walking on might not be too difficult. I know men’s fencing better than women’s. I know a couple guys on the men’s roster and they’re OK, not particularly good.

My son fences in college and loves it, and my daughter hopes to, too.

Go for it, and good luck.

To my knowledge, BC fencing competes against all the top programs (including the traditional powers) on the east coast and has held it own. It is on the up and up.

I fenced (foil) at BC in the 1970’s when it was a club team. It was great fun and an excellent exercise in stamina, quick thinking, tactics and balance. Overall, a good discipline.

I can’t comment on the competitiveness of fencing at BC seeing as how I’m not on the team, but it is still a D1 sport. My roommate this past semester fenced on the team and it didn’t seem like a huge time commitment, but then again he was a huge bum. To get to your question, I believe there were about 4 morning workouts and 2-3 practices in the afternoon per week.

I know the volleyball team got a new coach. I think there is a link on the website to send your info as a potential player. BCEAGLES.com and from there look for volleyball, should be on that page somewhere.
