Volunteer Abroad or Go to college summer camp

Hey guys, i didn't know where else to post this so im gonna post it here, but what I wanted to know was next year I basically have two options: 1. to go the the brown college summer program or 2. To volunteer in a latin american country for 5-8 weeks.

I'm assuming the later of the two would look better on my college app. What are your guys' opinions?

It really depends. Why do you want to volunteer in that particular region? Are you taking Spanish and hope to improve your language skills while doing volunteer work? Also, what sort of volunteer work will you be doing, and do you actually have a particular interest in it? For example, if you are interested in the healthcare field, and are doing healthcare related community service activities.
College admissions officers will see through attempts to pad your resume, so if you want to volunteer abroad just to look good on college applications you should pick something else. Make sure that if you decide to volunteer abroad that you have a good reason for picking a particular program.
The brown summer program could be good too, if you find classes that you would be really interested in taking. Try to choose based on which program you’d be more passionate about, not which would look best, because that would vary based on the student and what they did on each program.
good luck!

To volunteer anywhere abroad looks pretty damn awesome.

okay thanks guys!

@anonymous: um im doing it for 3 reasons. 1. to improve my spanish skills. 2. to help out communities with public health stuff. 3. to try to learn more about that countries culture.

I dont know exactly which country because you can’t apply until the fall.

Volunteer abroad. Not just because it would look better on your application, but think of the experience! It would be so fun (:

Volunteer! Programs like the Brown one can be awesome, but the volunteering experience may be soo much better. The Brown program seems so normal and is predictable (good classes, mix of good people, residential living drama), and pretty college-esque, which you’ll be getting a lot of later on. Volunterring would be a whole new experience unlike anything else.

i reaaaaaally wanted to volunteer abroad this summer, but i couldn;t find any decently priced, well-supervised program that lasted 2-4 weeks :frowning: but i still think it’s awesome!
