Volunteer abroad or summer programs

I just saw a thread about volunteering abroad. My parents are pushing me to do something educational and fun for my summer and both looks very fun (volunteering abroad and experiencing college life)

My one question is do both programs look good on college apps? Which is better?

To those who have done the volunteering abroad thing... Was it fun? Where did you go? How long? Worth the price??

Thanks :)

Bump!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bump Bump BUMP

it really depends on what you mean by volunteering abroad -- is this a program like building the same house in costarica that gets rebuild and knocked down every session? or saving the same turtle in the galapagos? Does it cost upwards of $3,000 for a few weeks? -- If so, colleges dont like these programs, b/c its just summer camp in different clothing. If you can find a program that continues your interest (solving math problems, sport, flute, forensic science, etc.) then thats what matters. It also helps if your interest is consistent and continues for your entire hs career

Thanks for answering :o

I want to be a doctor when I grow up so what if I attend those camps in which you travel abroad and study and work along side a real doctor?

Both programs look about the same: better than doing nothing, but since they are really based on "ability to pay", they are not a big plus on college apps.

My D turned it into a plus, by showing how she worked to pay her own way to the summer program!

^^^great idea, kudos to your D!
