Any other incoming students thinking about joining CUEMS, or know someone that's been a member? The time requirement seems pretty reasonable, and there is an on campus EMT-Basic class for those not already certified. I worked in Fire/EMS for 4 years and have mixed feelings about the field, but I certainly miss it. It also seems like a nice way to give back to the campus community.

I’m actually genuinely interested and would like to find out more about it. When I have time, I’ll peruse that site. My only health-related experience is volunteering at a hospital, though. I’d have to get certified and the like, but if the time allotment is reasonable I’d certainly go for it.

quick question for the pre meds: if you are already volunteering in a clinical setting, would the CU EMS program be viewed as medically-related work? The reason I ask is that, traditionally, being an EMT is viewed as a job. In this case it is on a volunteering basis. Also, how do they determine who can volunteer after completing the course? The website indicates that not everyone who completes the course gets enrolled…

A couple of my closest friends do it. It’s an extraordinary commitment and the group is really tight-knit.

Among other things, you really need to ask yourself if you’re the kind of person that other undergrads are going to want to spend a twelve-hour shift sitting next to.
