Some people told me there isn't a specific place to write the actual number of volunteer hours you have done..So where do you list it?

Also, I know you can receive awards, such as the ones Princeton gives out, for community service hours (coupled with academic achievements, etc.). But how do they even know how many hours a student has done??

I don’t know where you list those hours. I do know that places like Ivies are far more concerned about what you accomplished and learned as a result of your service than how many hours you served. Ivy admissions officers know that it’s possible to rack up hundreds of hours while doing nothing but filling up space until it’s time to go home. They’re aware that many students who don’t give a rat’s behind about helping others will show up to do community service only to decorate their resumes, and it’s perfectly fine with such students if they only warm chairs. That kind of volunteer service, however – even if it’s 1,000 hours of such so-called service, won’t impress Ivies and the few similar schools that consider ECs and service as part of admissions.
