What is a decent amount of volunteer hours for top colleges? I currently have 50, so would 100+ or 200+ be acceptable?

Any amount of volunteer hours is acceptable for colleges however if you want something nice to put on your resume, find a club that awards the Presidential Service Award (the bronze requires 100 hours in one year and the gold requires 250 hours in one year) and go for that because it’s a relatively prestigious award and it shows that you’ve done a lot of volunteering.

My son has little volunteer work because he has had a part-time job since age 14. Will most colleges take that into consideration?

@Dana3502, yes, colleges will take your son’s part-time job into consideration since he does not have a lot of time to volunteer.

For the nation’s most selective colleges, the sheer number of hours isn’t nearly as important as the quality of your service, what motivates you to serve, and what you have gleaned from your experiences serving others. You can reflect on all of these in your admission essays. Tons of students have numerous service hours, but fewer have a sincere passion for the work they do.
