Where are people volunteering that they have 1000ish hours of experience? That seems crazy to me. Are they spending months at hospitals or what? Spending time at camp???

Assume that someone volunteers for 1000 hours exactly over the course of 4 years of high school. That represents 250 hours a year. Assuming 180 school days total, this means somewhere in the neighborhood of 7 volunteer hours a week. People spend more time on extracurriculars than that. And this is excluding summer. Maybe people are volunteering their time to the extent of a full time job during summers. Who knows.

There are a lot of places, especially in the nonprofit world, that need more manpower. I'm involved with a gentleman from the YMCA who runs a tremendous number of programs. I've volunteered a fair amount and I know that if I wanted to, I could easily spend crazy 80 hour weeks there and still find more to do.

Believe me, it isn't that hard to rack up those kinds of volunteer hours if you put your mind to it.
