I currently volunteer on weekends at the local hospital and I teach religious education to second graders. I'm planning on getting involved with a club focusing on community service (soup kitchens, homeless shelters, etc...) in school this year.

Other than that, is there anything that anyone would reccomend doing as far as community service goes? I'd like to get further involved.

Volunteer at a muscular dystraphy (sp) camp. I'm doing tht next year :D. You can't do it until summer, but you get a LOT of community service hours.

I'd really like to do that. I have a lot of friends who do, and they have a blast. Unfortunately, though, my summers are booked solid, for the most part. I'm looking moreso for volunteer work during the school year.

you seem pretty good, but I volunteer at a local nursing home/resident center and I have a GREAT time. I work with the Alzheimer's residents, and I play show tunes and throw a ball around (for about 2 hours on Saturday, increasing to more soon). They really love it, and the more with-it people are like, Hey! You're back! haha, it's so rewarding. I used to be in the "regular" resident part, and, to be honest, it sucked. I just put on videos for them for like 4 hours.

So, my advice?
1) Don't get too overextended-you may feel you can do it, but you should be sure you can handle it. Be honest (at least to yourself) about your obligations. You can ruin great contacts/reccomendations by blowing it during a particularly stressful time. (Ie, you may want to lessen/skip AP time, or SATs, or whatever)
2) Do what you love. Don't just do it for the hours, or if you are just doing it for the hours, at least you do something you can tolerate. I was really ready to skip every time and had to drag myself to do 4 hours, and I barely went 16 times. I've gone a ton more times for 2 hours. So if only for that reason, you do what you love for more hours.

The volunteer work that I enjoyed the most was working with a Special Olympics soccer team. It was fun and very rewarding. I also liked sorting food for the food pantry because it was extremely easy and it still felt rewarding.

I volunteer at the senior center, and it's really fun! The people there are really interesting and funny. And, it's always nice when the "regulars" recognize me and tell me that it's wonderful to see my "smiling young face" (that's what they always say... hee hee!). Everyone has a perception of the elderly as boring/senile, but these people are SPUNKY, and have lived such interesting lives. I honestly love it =)

I volunteer with inner city kids in a basketball program I started. I love working with kids, and coaching them is awesome. It's so rewarding, especially the kids we keep off the streets.

during my volunteer at pharmacy I rather helped to create a really cool project on anti-dote survey...u may wanna check for something like that! I LOVED each and every moment as hell!
