My son will go to 8th grade next yr and turns 14 yrs this summer.
He is eligible to volunterr at a few palces this summer.
Is it worth pursuing Presidential volunteer award by doing 100 hrs at this time ?
Does the award matter?
Is it better pursue it in High school when it can be counted.
If you mean will summer volunteering count befroe high school, the answer is no. If it is something he intends to stick with that is very specific and other connections can be made to the volunteering, then maybe, but it will never create a “tipping point” in an application. If he wants to volunteer, great. But if he doesn’t want to, let him enjoy one of his few remaining summers as a kid. In they eyes of college admissions, pretty much only high school is relevant, and that definitely applies to extracurricular activities.
it is worthwhile if a kid wants to do it. It is not worthwhile at all if he does not want to do it. He needs to answer it, not any outsider. Anything that is his personal goal and within the law is worthwhile to pursue. Anything that is outside of his goals, has no reasons for pursuing.
i actually agree with MiamiDAP on this one.
The student should volunteer because they WANT to volunteer. And once the volunteer hours “count” which isn’t until high school, the student should also pick where he or she wants to volunteer or do community service hours.
If this rising 8th grader wants to volunteer…great. If not…how about some kind of activity for an 8th grader?
