Has anybody ever done it? What things do you do? How beneficial is it?

I used to volunteer at a local library a couple years back. My everyday tasks were to find reserve books, place books back in their rightful place after returned, sometimes clean up children’s book at the play area, and so forth. To be honest, it was quite easy and I met a lot of interesting people while I was there.

I volunteered at the library before. I think it is one of the best things I have ever done. At the library I volunteered at, we have crafts day, read to kids day, and other things fun. Reading and making crafts and helping them on them is soooo much fun. Knowing that their smiles and laugh are making a difference. There are many opportunities to enrich the kids, through playing with them with books, making them laugh, and showing how much fun reading is!

I think I made a huge impact on them! Some of them even came back just to see me read to them! It was a great chance for me to feel like I was making a difference.

I volunteered at my local library for 3 years. My typical tasks were shelving DVDs, books, videos and cassettes which were pretty boring. Occasionally I helped kids with crafts and games. You get to engage with patrons a lot which is the best part.

i’ve been volunteering at the library for like 3 weeks now and I really don’t like it.
I spend most of the time shelving books in the childrens section.

I organized books, put books back on shelves, helped close up for the night, and cataloged items. Also, I did a lot of preparation for a carnival they held.

I’ve been volunteering at the library for a couple weeks & it’s not that bad. Some of the tasks can get repetitive but i’ve had a good experience thus far.

shelving books has got to be the most boring thing in the history of life… I lasted two weeks

For volunteering at my school library, I shelves textbooks at the front counter and books on the cart, where someone will later shelves them at the fic/nonfic sections of the library.

i volunteered at the library for a summer. Basically ran that branches summer reading program. Saw a lot of kids cheat to get the stuff, did a LOT of paperwork, and shelved a ton of books. Lets just say that it wasn’t the most interesting job i’ve ever had or volunteered for. Some of the kids i worked with were total slackers but incredibly funny and weird, and they were cool to talk to. When i wanted to stop shelving, I’d hide in the kids section and read all the books i read when i was young.

It is boringgggggggg I don’t recommend it.
Basically all I did was shelving books and making prizes for some summer reading program.
Don’t do it!

honestly it kind of sucks
the children are the worst part, I have to resist punching them out because they’re so annoying
it’s easy, but also really boring

I worked in the school library every day throughout middle school and high school and at the public library for a few hours every week for my last two years in high school.

Usually, volunteers just shelve books, especially at a big library where they have a plethora of volunteers. No one likes to shelve books, but it’s a necessary part of running a library. There are also a lot of odd jobs and errands that volunteers do. At the school libraries, I checked books in and out, answered the phone, and just ran errands (made copies, delivered things, cut things out, etc.). At the public library, which uses a non-computerized system, I’ve shelved books, fed the rabbit, organized and catalogued movies, checked people out, repaired books, stuck those little card envelopes on the books and put new cards in them, helped people find stuff, lifted heavy stuff - whatever they need done, I do.

I also teach a Spanish class to little kids at the public library. I can imagine that if a library had an art class, it would be fun to help with that. Libraries often sponsor tutoring and other classes, which you could help with.

I’ve also found that at my public library (which is small, and non-computerized), the librarians are all older women who know little to nothing about computers. I help them with that sometimes.

Basically, working at a library is awesome. :B It’s laid back and quiet, librarians are generally good recommendation writers, and there can be a lot of variety (again, maybe not if there are a lot of volunteers).

I’ve volunteered at the library this summer and have already gotten 55 hours of community service. All I do is sit at a table and manage the summer program for kids and teens.
