Hi!

So I've been looking for some volunteering opportunities this summer, and I was wondering if volunteering at the library would be a good use of time?

I'm looking towards being a pediatrician, and I have done and am continuing to do some volunteering activities with children. I also plan to begin volunteering at the hospital next year. I know that the library wouldn't relate to my interest in medicine but would it be something to do over summer?

Thanks!

Depending on what is needed you will probably spend most of your time sorting books/stacking shelves. If you think you will enjoy it go for it!

it couldn’t hurt, but only commit to it if you’re genuinely interested

I volunteer at the library during the summer and you will find opportunities to be with children. Many libraries have summer reading programs and children do actually participate (at least in my library). There are also programs especially aimed toward the younger ones (0-4 years) that encourages them to read and to play with their peers. Librarians often appreciate the extra help when it comes with the little ones.

There will be book sorting but if your library has any similar programs than it shouldn’t be hard to work with children. Regardless of how it relates to your career, it will show that you’re a person that cares deeply about their community. I personally feel that any type of volunteer service is good. Rare is the person that will work for free.

Thank you guys for the responses! I think I will give it a shot… and that’s a good point about how I might get a chance to work with children.

I’ve volunteered at the library for about six years now and I think it’s pretty nice…it’s a fairly typical EC but it’s something to do. I’ve always worked with children and have never really shelved books, but probably every library is different.
I think the idea of connecting your ECs with your intended major is kind of overrated on here. Most people don’t really know what they want to do for a career, and I don’t think high school students should devote themselves exclusively to one thing anyway. Just do stuff that you’re currently interested in, whether or not that interest will reach into the future.

If you volunteer frequently and make a good impression, you will also be able to use that experience for a job reference.

I started volunteering at my local library last year and it usually is menial work like shelving. However, my supervisor is really nice. She is one of my job references and I plan to ask her to write a reference letter for my college app.

Working at a library will help with communicating with children and their parents. I’m working this summer at my local library and I get to talk to kids about the summer reading program and it’s really a great experience. But if you end up doing shelving it will look good either way.
