I am going to volunteer this summer at various places. I read the stickied thread about the ECs and volunteer work but I have an additional question. Just say I enjoy working with people. When volunteering, should I gear my hours towards working with people of all ages, groups, etc. as opposed to working with animals (as an example)?

When writing a college essay about myself, should I mention my passion of helping and understanding others? How would I give specific examples if I volunteer multiple times at different places? Will more than one example suffice?

Do the kind of volunteering that you'd most enjoy. That will lead to the most fulfilling experience.

From what I've seen, it's often best to choose to volunteer at one place instead of volunteering at many places. By volunteering at one place, you get to know the people very well, and you also can get and create opportunities to expand your responsibilities.

Your college essay should be on whatever info you think would show you in a positive light and would help the college learn more about you. Since essays are short (even a 500-word essay is short) often it's best to focus on only one or two examples that back up whatever idea you're trying to convey.
