Volunteering in another country without having to pay for it.

Hi everybody. I'm a senior this year, which means that I don't have to worry about planning some crazy structured summer now. So I was thinking I wanted to go to some far away place like africa to help out. Problem is, every trip I've found to do that requires me to pay a couple thousand. Does anyone know of any paid international work programs?

that's really, really hard to find...

yeah it is near impossible. I spent four hours on monday trying to find an answer to that question but I couldn't. Sorry!!!

that's as rare as gold, u could try some local ones......and defnitely those would look good, well one thing though, if u plan something COMPLETELY by urself, u can do that volunteering thing at a very cheap price!

Why don't you try to find a cheap program like AFS or Rotary, and save up for it while you still have time?

why most volunteer programs ask for 18+ years old people?.. (AFS as an example!!).. I know the answer, but I get upset when I find some program really really nice but I can't go 'cause of my age.. :S that's unfair!!

My friend who looked up Habitat for Humanit is free, but you have to pay for air fare. I may be wrong on that though. :(

VFP has a lot of programs you could look at. You have to pay airfare and about a $250 fee, if I remember right. I don't know anyone who has actually volunteered with them, so I couldn't tell you what it's like though

Yeah, Habitat is def. free. People at my school do it all the time. Although, they are usually in groups, but I think you can do it alone. If you find one in your area, you wouldn't even have to pay for airfare.

I know some people who did foreign low-cost volunteering. If you're Catholic/Protestant/Muslim/Jewish, w/e try to contact a church of your religion in the area you hope to volunteer and see if you can work out staying there. A girl I know got free room and board in a Catholic seminary in Honduras for a few weeks and the priests down there even organized a volunteering routine and gave her transportation, etc.

This is one possible option -contacting the religious communities in poor countries - they're always looking for support.
