Volunteering or Internship

Going to spend some time this summer on one of the two.

I could maybe fit both in and will probably do more work experience as the term starts anyway, but was thinking of volunteering abroad for a couple of weeks this summer.

I want to do it, feel I could contribute something and have some fun but from a practical point of view, I want to get into my first choice unis, would I be better served taking up an internship at an investment firm or bank (I want to do Economics)

I'm going overseas for DOE later on anyway. Do unis view overseas volunteering as a positive thing? Will it have a major impact on my application? If so, what kind of things should I volunteer for (conservation, sports coaching - don't really have any link to what I want to do at uni)

If you have the opportunity to do an internship, it will be extremely beneficial to you and your profile. Nothing beats real-world experience. Few students have the chance to get involved in quality internships- it’s something that can definitely help set you apart.

Volunteering is always nice, but it’s something you should do because you WANT to do it, not because it’s going to help your profile. The fact of the matter is, at top colleges, EVERYONE has volunteer work on their application. It really won’t set you apart from the crowd unless it’s something really unique. Any kind of volunteering that you are passionate about is good though.

I’m going to volunteer anyway, it’s something I enjoy doing. However, it’s my last summer before the admission process starts and I’m also being practical.

I realise that everyone will have volunteer work but this particular one is an overseas project. Basically, I’ll go somewhere like Chile and be involved in community projects. Was just wondering if that would set me apart. I want to do something like that at some point in my life regardless but with college applications coming, I was just wondering if I would be better served interning or getting some work experience rather than volunteering overseas when I can volunteer at the local hospital simultaneously.

Any other viewpoints?

You’d be much better off with an internship. Volunteering positions are much easier to obtain than internships. Doing both would definitely benefit you more. Volunteering is something you can do whenever though. There’s always going to be volunteering opportunities, but internships aren’t that common. Don’t pass up an internship.

You should definitely go with the internship. As others have mentioned, they set you apart more. I don’t think volunteering really helps an application anymore now that everyone does it.
