Volunteering or Internship

If you have the opportunity to do an internship, it will be extremely beneficial to you and your profile. Nothing beats real-world experience. Few students have the chance to get involved in quality internships- it’s something that can definitely help set you apart.</p>

<p>Volunteering is always nice, but it’s something you should do because you WANT to do it, not because it’s going to help your profile. The fact of the matter is, at top colleges, EVERYONE has volunteer work on their application. It really won’t set you apart from the crowd unless it’s something really unique. Any kind of volunteering that you are passionate about is good though.

<p>I’m going to volunteer anyway, it’s something I enjoy doing. However, it’s my last summer before the admission process starts and I’m also being practical. </p>

<p>I realise that everyone will have volunteer work but this particular one is an overseas project. Basically, I’ll go somewhere like Chile and be involved in community projects. Was just wondering if that would set me apart. I want to do something like that at some point in my life regardless but with college applications coming, I was just wondering if I would be better served interning or getting some work experience rather than volunteering overseas when I can volunteer at the local hospital simultaneously.</p>
