How good does this look on a college application? Does it matter how long you volunteer? Isn't it possible to turn the experience into a great, non-cliched essay? I am Indian and want to volunteer in India where I have never been before, so there is cultural significance, and also the volunteering importance because I am quite dedicated to volunteering here at home. What do you guys think?

Even the most cliched subject can be turned into a non-cliched essay. I don’t see anything wrong with finding your roots and volunteering in India. Just don’t end that essay “and so I discovered that we are all the same underneath.” :)

I have the same question! I have vounteered abroad, and it was the best experience of my life. It sounds so cliche even just talking about it like that, and it’s a huge focus of my time-I raise money through out the year for the place and go work there in the summer. I just dont know how to go about writing about it and not sounding like tons of others or one essay-lengthed cliche.

I was thinking: take a unique experience from one point in the trip. Something interesting that happened and how you dealt with it. Hows that?
