Volunteering

How important is it in the admissions process? What's a good amount of hours?

Is it detrimental to have only a few hours?

Do you know of anyone who had absolutely no hours and got into top tier schools/ their first choice?

Thanks. So long. (and thanks for all the fish)

hahaha. 42! lol

my take on volunteer hours is its a nice embellishment to an application but it's only that unless you did something truely amazing like, idk, built a school in africa over your spring break or raised a kazillion dollars for what ever...

cmon, volunteering is fun though! i seriously do it ALL the time, anywhere, everywhere so I really have not been able to tie them all togeather...eh

I have heard that community service is becoming vital in the admission process lately. That doesn't mean that you have to go out and do hundreds of hours at different places, but I would pick at least one place that you are comfortable and interested with and stick to it. I volunteer at a doctor's office and i will probably be switching to a hopsital over the summer. Just pick someplace you like and stick to it. Oh, and you should probably have more than just a few hours.

Phoenixdown, you have to realize colleges are trying to accept people who can help form a community on their campus. GPA and SAT/ACT are the two factors that will make you competitive for a school, but really nowadays those two alone will not get you into many schools.

Colleges like people who show dedication but also give back to their community. So that does mean dedicating quite a few hours to a certain extra curricular and doing quite a few volunteer service hours to show colleges they are accepting someone who will bring something more then just stats
