VOTE! Brown University vs. Amherst College

Planned Major: Anthropology

I am in a complete and utter gridlock.

Basically, I would greatly appreciate which one you would choose to go to and why

oh and sidenote, I’m planning on a career that will let me travel a lot internationally and while I don’t know if I’ll be based in the U.S. or another country as of right now, I’ve always dreamed of living in another country so I dont know if this should make me choose Brown over Amherst…

The study abroad program at Amherst is reputed to be amazing.

I would absolutely choose Amherst. The LAC education is incredible. Also, you have other options in the five college system. And the feel is much safer than Providence.

obviously brown - the professors teaching undergrads include three former heads of state

I would choose Brown. Its anthropology is brilliant

ahah wow two for two

anymore takers?

I dont know why I didnt finish my comment earlier but as I was saying, as I hope to be involved in international affairs, would Brown’s reputation then be more helpful? However, I’m not sure if I want choose a school just because of prestige…

Brown is an amazing school, perfect for your major. plus, you could take classes pass-fail there.

Thanks for the input guys!

To explain more about exactly what I have in conflict is that I’ve done research and Brown definitely has the better anthropology program but I’m leaning towards Amherst bc of the close relationships with professors and the tight-knit community.

Basically it’s the academic aspect vs. the social aspect.

Also, Brown and Amherst aren’t very different from each other so I’m really just stumped.

They’re obviously very different in terms of size, so I think what you mean is academically they are both very strong. Because for you it’s academic vs. social, I’d go with the social, and thus Amherst. IMO your social life/how much fun you have is at least as important, if not more important, than academics. B/c Brown and Amherst both have great academics, I’d go where you feel more comfortable socially.

tough tough choice!

flip a coin

I’d say Amherst. They’re both strong academically, but I think Amherst has an edge socially (with a tighter community). It’s also somewhat more prestigious—many (foolishly) look down on Brown.

I’d disagree. In laymen’s terms, most have never heard of Amherst. Brown has stock because it’s an Ivy. In academia, I think their prestige is equal.

Not around here (Northeast) at least. People I know think of Amherst as little Harvard, while Brown is the hippy, second-tier Ivy.

quomodo, yeah thats what i meant i guess im just losing the ability to express myself! haha

but someone told me brown is just a bigger version of amherst and while there are differences, that statement does seem true to me

and JohnAdams12, who knows i may just do that ;)

Im from around the Chicago area and both of you are right. Only people in my honors and AP classes knew of Amherst but when I was in the Northeast this summer, I definitely noticed the shift in attitude towards Amherst.

“but someone told me brown is just a bigger version of amherst and while there are differences, that statement does seem true to me”

I haven’t found this to be true (and I’m surprised more people haven’t chimed in on this point). While there is a fair amount of overlap, I’ve found Brown more liberal, more edgy, more non-traditional. Amherst has always felt more traditional, more pre-professional, more middle of the road politically, more jocky.

Neither “profile” is necessarily better or worse and this is certainly no absolute definition of the students or character of these schools (again, a fair amount of overlap). But I do think the tenor of the two is different. Could any one individual be happy at both? Absolutely. But you may want to consider who you are and where you’d feel more at home.

Vote: Brown.

Brown:4
Amherst: 3

Still neck and neck

Visit them both, spend a night, sit in on classes, and see which feels right. They are both great schools, but one will feel more comfortable. Go with your gut.
