Voting

Can students vote on campus? My son’s voter registration card is at home. Does anybody know why they need to have and if they need to get some sort of waiver since he is oos?

My daughter failed to sign up for an absentee ballot, so we just mailed her ballot to her when it came in the mail last week. We are a swing state and need her vote here in Colorado :-)

3kids - I think he will need an absentee ballot from the state of Texas - if that is where he is registered.

S called Voter Reg office in Tuscaloosa a week or so ago. The deadline to reg in AL is Oct 26th (10 days before an election). He was led to believe that he can register in AL, even tho he is from IL (and lists perm address as IL). But is that true? Can an IL resident (who is living in AL on campus) reg to vote in AL? Please let me know if you have any experience with this. He just turned 18 mid October, so he missed the IL absentee ballot, due to that late birthdate and not being registered in time for it.

Yes, he may register since he resides in Alabama. He will need to list his resident as his Tuscaloosa address. That can be found on the housing page under residence halls.

Or he can just describe where he lives on the registration form. When he votes, he will need to show his ACT Card since that is most likely the only ID he will have that would be accepted.

Don’t parents who might claim some credit/deduction on tax forms need to be careful about designating place of residence? Not sure but…

AlabamaVotes.gov has more information about registering and acceptable identification.

There is a Supreme Court case which explicitly specifies that college students have the right to vote in their college town or place of permanent residence. Some states, not Alabama, are trying to make it harder for students to vote in their college towns, but this case supersedes those laws.

2012 is not a big year for voting in Alabama as almost all state offices will be up for reelection in 2014.

As WA is entirely vote-by-mail, I simply have my ballot mailed to my Tuscaloosa address, fill it out, and mail it back.

From one Texan to another…

Your D needs to request a ballot by mail. My D has requested hers but it has yet to arrive. This needs to be done ASAP to meet the deadline. See the link.
