Voulenteer hours

hello, i need some help with getting more voulenteer experience in the medical field. my town has a voulenteer ems orginization that i work at, i get about 100 hours a month usually, but i was also thinking about voulenteering in medical research projects in my area for more experience. if anyone has any suggestions on how to go about that it would be great.

wow 100 hours a month...

uh wow you have a lot already!

yea dude, 100 a month is a lot. but hey, if you treat it like a job, where you usually go more than work then that's great. that's like me, my mom's a dentist and i work (but of course ill put volunteer on the app) for her, i basically get around a hundred hours a month as well. as for you volunteering in a medical research project, that sounds awesome.

btw, out of topic but, i know a guy who i went to highschool with and he started volunteering at the hospital since he was freshman year and he stopped volunteering after graduation. He went around 5 times a week, 5 hours a day. i did the calculations and that's around 5,200 hours of volunteer. Too bad he's majoring in Business. That would've been soooo good for pre-med. apparently his parents wanted him to pursue medicine..hahaha

If you are working for a dentist, and getting paid, that's "work" - not volunteering. There isn't anything wrong with having medical related work experience, and it might be frowned upon if they think you lied on your application. (and the high hours could be a red flag) Just something to think about.

the hours and the fact that it's your PARENTS place...willDEF be a red flag

And thinking about it further, especially since it's your mom's practice - don't call it "volunteering" - even if you weren't getting paid, it would look like working toward family support, not "volunteering for the public good". Just record it as work experience,- nothing wrong with that.

i guess you guys are right about the dishonesty of puting volunteerin intead of work. but the thing is, i DID actually work for free there for a long time. about a year of volunteer, free work at my mom's office. she then decided to start paying me so i could have some allowance. haha. and ill actually do work experience at other dentists, especially those who specialize as they wouldn't probably deny my request to volunteer since my mom refers patients to them. but yeah, my question is, does the fact that my mom is a dentist and i've been working at her place for a LONG time help my dental school application?

oh, for the post above, i meant shadowing other dentists that specialize, not volunteering. im assuming shadowing is something that is really short term and volunteering/work experience is something longer. right?

even if your mom didnt pay you for a while....it doesnt count as volunteerism...you're part of her family

it'll help your dental school app

Of course the exposure will help with admissions, but the pay issue stands (because it's your mom's office - your "help" will be viewed as helping to support the family, whether or not you accepted a paycheck. It's not volunteering in the sense that it helped the community at large, and shouldn't be recorded as such (because that won't help you and it very well could hurt.)

ok thanks guys. ill definitely not put it as volunteer on the app then. but im not gonna worry about that now, im only freshman...........in college. lol

btw, i just called another dentist about 3 miles away and the dentist's brother, the manager told me to call the office back after Nov. 15, after the dentist gets married and then he said the dentist will be more than willing to let me shadow. =D any tips on what to do when shadowing, i haven't shadowed before. (btw im doing a thread on this question under Pre-Med topics)

Dress nice, maybe take a lab coat, show up early, prepare some intelligent questions, never interrupt patient care (be a silent observer). Write a thank you note.

ahh. ok. thanks pearl.

who are you
