Hello - I am a rising high school senior this year and am looking at Penn State as one of my options. I am a singer before anything else (so I would like to focus on VP) but also love MT and don’t want to give it up. Is there good cross over between the two? What are the undergraduate performance opportunities there? Are they fair (or helpful/good!) or is it more graduate heavy? Is the vocal staff attentive? I don’t know a whole lot about Penn States’ music program, so I would love to hear any other thoughts about it, too. All the best, thank you!
You may find more information in the MT Forum Penn State threads. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/pennsylvania-state-university-mt/

Penn State’s MT major is more difficult to get into than their VP and although the faculty teaches in both disciplines, the VP students do not audition for the musicals and to the best of my knowledge, the MT students don’t cross over into the operas. Grads and undergrads can audition for the operas but the leads go to the older students, which is as it should be.
Depending upon how long you have been studying and your goals, there could be better options for you.

Thank you so much! From when I actually posted this, I looked into Penn State a LOT and found out it wasn’t that great at all for vocalists (or MT people) because of current teachers pushing voices too far, and there is no crossover. Thank you so much again!
