VT Engineering vs. UVA Engineering ?

also, I do apologize for getting the info wrong, but it’s not the end of the world

guillaume, I really wouldn’t judge a whole school by the comments of one individual who doesn’t even attend it.

It’s very interesting. The curriculum for both schools is readily available online.

VT Mech Engineering

UVa Mech Engineering

Compare for yourself. This would avoid anecdotal stories.
Peace

This really is a ridiculous argument. All other things equal Tech>UVA in engineering, but life is never that simple, and for some UVA is the better choice. I would find it hard to believe a dean of engineering for any university would encourage students to go to another school. Could you imagine if the dean of the college of liberal arts at Tech would tell prospective students to go to UVA instead? I would hope, despite the honest advice, they would be removed simply for doing a disservice to the college and Tech as whole. Just because someone has not met a person from a certain school doesnt mean that school is somehow giving out an inferior education.

GoTechGo, just because you father has not met an engineer from UVA does not mean a thing. I can name many reasons why he has not met any but lets not go there. I have been in the eng field for more than 30 years. I’ve said before, both schools are good and its up to the students what fit them better and what they get out of the school.

I think davh01 has said all that’s needed to be said. Both are in the upper echelon schools and a name won’t mean ANYTHING if you don’t do more than your part to set yourself above the other students.

It’s not like law in the sense that what law school you attend is by far and large the biggest factor in terms of employment.

For engineering, if you get to MIT but don’t do anything special, someone from any school ranked 2-1000 with great experience will get the job every time. And that’s the way it should be.

For life as an engineer, VT might be the wiser choice since they would have a wider recognition in producing sound engineers simply because it is their primary focus. Though I do know a UVa engineer who has graduated and gone on to obtain a prestigious career. But again, IMO, if you’re going engineering for sure VT would be the better choice since they have more recognition and opportunities in the engineering field.

I just want to put out there for anonyms, that if I were a Dean of any college and I had a child, I would still provide my child with my best, unbiased opinions in terms of where to go, rather than laying on loyalties. I guess I would be fired… even though my discussion with my child would be in private, at home.
