Hey guys, I'm an HS senior right now from VA.

I was waitlisted at my first two choices and am waiting to hear back from them.

In the meantime, I was accepted to Virginia Tech and NYU CAS. I was invited to apply to Tech's University Honors program.

The thing is, I have no interest in doing anything that involves "tech," like computer science or programming or engineering or whatever. I want to major in something like English.

I know that NYU has a lot of prestige and some people compare it to the Ivy league schools, but now I feel like only NYU Stern and Tisch are held in high regard. The CAS is overpriced and just for name. Anyone who knows anything about colleges knows that NYU CAS is just where they make money, admissions are not as "highly selective" as they claim to be. Am I crazy?

Either way, I don't plan to stay at either school for more than 2 years, hopefully only 1. If I go to VT (hopefully I get into the Honors program) and study English, will it look good at all? I will try to transfer to a better, more well-rounded school once I am there, so I am just wondering if top schools (both in-state and out) will seriously consider a student pursuing an English major from VT, or if they will just see it as a joke.

Please answer ASAP lol, deadling rapidly approaching!

In all honesty, you should pick the school you will be happiest at IN CASE YOU DON’T TRANSFER. Because sometimes people get rejected everywhere and end up having to stay at their first school longer. So go with the school you could see yourself being happiest at for two years, or maybe even four.

I go to NYU, in particular, one of those ‘other’ colleges, the one that has one of the best communications/cultural studies programs in the country. CAS also has many other programs that are famous, and is not just a cash cow. Technically, NYU makes money off of ALL the schools, not just your beloved Stern and Tisch.

eyeroll

But is CAS really that much better than Tech Honors? It seems like it’s for kids who got rejected at all ivy leagues but still want the prestige of attending an expensive private school. The stats would probably be the same to Tech Honors, maybe lower. I meant no insult. I’m just insecure.

It’s like comparing cantaloupes and pears. CAS is a liberal arts school, Tech is obviously based around science and technology. CAS does not make any claims to be awesome at science (except for a few departments), that’s why we merged with Polytechnic.

Couldn’t you make the same claim that kids who go to Oberlin or Bard or Sarah Lawrence are also quote, “Ivy League rejects”?

I’m currently at Virginia Tech (was just accepted as a transfer student to W&M). I’m also in the Honors program. I believe I recall someone telling me that the acceptance rate into honors is around 70%, so don’t be fooled by the label. They do offer a number of opportunities such as honors housing, the varying honors diplomas, researching with professors, stuff like that, but I wouldn’t get too excited over it. My majors are International Studies and German and although our program is decent, it’s not as good as it is at other schools. So I would urge you to pick the one that focuses on what you like. The campus is very nice and the community relatively small, not sure which one you’re looking for since NYUCAS and VT seem polar opposites. Anyhow, just thought I’d share my input.

So VT Honors students have a better/great shot at transfer, at least to in-sate schools? I’ll only go to NYU if it significantly improves my chances of transferring compared to Tech.

Also, what stats did you have at Tech/HS? And did you get WL’d or rejected from W&M out of hs?

Thanks!

how about Gallain???

HS stats were terrible: 3.6 unweighted, 1860 SAT, I volunteered at a hospital for 500+/- hours and was on a good quiz bowl team for 4 years, etc.
College stats: 3.93 GPA (first semester), I took mainly Liberal Arts courses (econ, math, German, music, art, etc.), and of course in the honors program (which I didn’t even get to put on my application for W&M because I didn’t do CommonApp. There’s a different form for students who have applied within the year that’s very short and doesn’t leave room for much boasting, just one essay).

I was rejected out of HS. I think it may be better to go to Tech if you want to transfer to another school in Virginia later. I’m guessing they like transfer students from the same state? Hope that helps.

bump any more advice?

I chose VT, so I am wondering if I stand a good chance at the good state schools for transfer, even though I am studying English. I’m worried that maybe they will disregard any GPA or reason I may have for transferring because I am coming from VT’s English dept and, knowing that Tech is a “tech” school, they won’t see my accomplishments as legitimate.
