「W」grade

How is the grade 「W」 affect transfer addmission? (Especially, UCB and UCLA)
Compared to 「B」 and 「W」, which one is better? How about 「C」 and 「W」?
If we get an 「A」 in the class which we got an 「W」 once, is it regarded same as an 「A」?

I am wondering the same thing...

Yes it is regarded same as an A. The UC's dont really mind the W's but I'm sure it doesn't help your application a lot if you have an excessive amount of them.

Would not hurt your chances too much if you have no more than 2 of them. After that, you would have to explain to the admissions officers why you have them if you have more than 3-5 W grades, which might be very difficult to explain if you received them over the course of 4 semesters.

In my case, I should have taken a W in my intro. to Logic class because I wasn't doing very well in that class. I was afraid to get another W on my transcript after receiving one a few years ago. Also, I wanted to retain my fulltime status at the time. But once I realize I wasn't making any headway, I tried to drop the class, only to find that it was too late. So I ended up with a D in the class. Out of the 10 students who remained in the class, 2 passed and 8 failed.

Now I had to explain why I got that D grade to the admissions officers at Stanford and Brown. The D also brought down my GPA to a 3.52. Far from the 3.7 that I planned to get. If you're failing a class, a W is MUCH BETTER than a D/F grade. Use the W when neccessary.

Whoa ok I can say somethin on this subject. I have MORE than 2 semesters worth of W's. Why? Cuz I got off the train track for a little bit. I think I had around 15 W's throughout JrCollege. I explained in one of my essays why I had so many. I got into UCSB, UCI, UCR, and UCSD with a butt load of W's. Good luck

Thank you guys for reply. I felt quite relieved.
Do you think we should retake the course we got W as soon as possible?

noooo i don't think its necessary. unless you want to. i took a class and got a W then retook it and got another W hahaha finally I realized that History of the Americas just wasn't for me, no matter who taught it!

what about like pass/no credit options? Say you get a No Credit in a class, since it doesn't affect your gpa, do college care?

i did that before. it was alllll good. just make sure it's not a class that is gana be towards your degree. only do it for electives.

becky, are you talking about p/nc or w?

p/nc. thats the whole point in taking a class like that. and then u can re-take it and get credit for it. talk to your councelor about it.

what if you got the nc?

i've talked to berkeley about n/c before, and i dont remember if they told me if it was good or bad. you will need to retake a transferable class, if not the same class, to make up for it though. a n/c is a D or an F, so i would think college committees will know you have either one of those grades.
i got into Cal with 5 W's. no worries. they even told me that they take a black marker and cross out the W's during decision time.
