W Grades at a CC

Hello, I'm an art major at a community college hoping to transfer to either UCLA or UC Berkeley. I plan to apply to med school after getting my BA in art, so I need to take all of the necessary prereqs.

Last semester, I received three W grades (one of them was in Calc III). This semester, I'm enrolled in only two courses (Physics and Calc III) and was thinking about dropping Calc III again. If I don't take the W, then I will ruin my 4.0 GPA with a C or a B. Would another W look horrible on my application?

You’re an art major? Why are you taking Physics and Calc III–and no art classes? And you’re majoring in art but planning on attending medical school? Smells like a ■■■■■.

If you’re serious… W’s normally don’t mean anything, but getting two W’s in the same class may be cause for concern. If it were me, I’d work my butt off and get a B. That’ll drop you to 3.95 if you have 57 units of A’s upon transfer. A 3.95 just makes you seem like a real person, not an obsessive perfect student.

Of course, you may still be a ■■■■■, and not a real person.

^ you can still get into medical school with an art major for your undergrad year. it doesnt matter which major you had on your undergrad year. Biology is a major thats highly recommended, but you can get in with a dance major.

med schools look at your overall GPA, MCAT, volunteer, research, etc.

heres what you do: Study your butt of and end strong.

Thanks for your responses – and I’m most definitely not a ■■■■■! I took all of my art requirements in the first year of community college, which is why I’m sort of kicking back right now. (And the choice of undergrad major doesn’t matter for med school.) I’d still like to hear some more opinions . . .

I know you can go to med school as an art major, it’s just unusual. That, coupled with the other oddities in his post, and the fact that it was his first post, made me question if he was real.

Glad to see I was wrong. :-)

I agree with nick just take the hit on the GPA. In real life no one is perfect, and the schools know this. Taking the hit on the GPA will leave a better impression than if you show that you can’t finish things by droping the same class two times.

They don’t care about W’s, I wouldn’t worry unless you had 10+ and only then if you were a borderline applicant.

Actually you’re applying as an art major, meaning that calc/physics grades won’t matter too much so you should really be more concerned with whether med schools will care about the W’s. (and this is not the forum for med school apps)
