W in a course?

I am considering withdrawing from a course that is required for my major. I'm a first semester senior, and I could easily substitute it with another course next semester and still complete my major on time. I just received the first test back and I failed it, and I feel like it will be hard to pull back up to even a B - especially given that I HATE the class and I think the one I could take next semester would be a LOT more interesting...

It's not that I'm so afraid of getting a B, I've gotten plenty before. But right now my GPA is at 3.71 and my science GPA is 3.6, so I was really hoping to pull both up or at least keep them constant by the time I apply next spring. I realize that usually dropping for a B is a pretty bad idea, but in this case, I'm wondering if it would be so bad.

So, I have 3 weeks left to decide whether to drop the course or not. Would 1 W on my transcript look very bad to med schools? Would it be reason for question or concern at all?

by the way, i got a 35 on my mcat and rly good ECs. if thats relevant at all.

bump

No, one W isn't going to look bad. It probably won't even come up. But if it does, you need a better reason than "I almost got a B and couldn't handle that". But if you actually bombed the test and don't think you can pull it back to where you want it, then sure go ahead and go with the W.

BTW, if you're a senior, you have enough units that one B isn't going to significantly alter your GPA.

It's a 'required course' for your major and you are a Senior student, right?

I suppose this means that you must complete this course for graduation.

Withdrawing itself shouldn't be a big deal at any other time in your College years except in your case, you have to think about also graduating on time.

Why do you think you could not do well in the first test? Is it because the course content is tough? Or you lacked interest in the course, therefore you did not feel like investing sufficient time to study this course? Is there anything in your study habits you could have changed to get a better grade? Some honest self reflection may help you.

ECs are good but sounds like if this course is a requirement for your major, you gotta find a way to complete it for your graduation.

Could you have spent a tadd bit less time on ECs and more studying for this course? Would that have helped? Can you chat with the prof and ask if he could give you a make-up test?

Well, I'm required to take a course within that category, so if not this one, I can easily take another one next semester and have no problem graduating on time. I'm ahead in my hours so I will finish both my majors next semester with the minimum number of hours.
