I apologize in advance for the odd title of the post. My S has completed the W & L Rapid Application (he received this online) and has completed it along with the W& L supplement and the application for the new Johnson Scholarship program. His SAT CR + M are below school's middle 50%-1240. However, his UW GPA is 3.8, most rigorous curriculum, strong EC's and varsity tennis player for 4 years ( regionally rankied).

I know W and L is definately a reach for him. However, now that his application is complete ( applying RD), he has received three packets from separate colleges within W and L. These are the schools who have majors he is interested in, so I am assuming they are simply sending information. I am concerned that S may read more into this-e.g.looks better than a reach for admission-hence the separate mailings. Can anyone give me their opinion on this? Thanks so much!

Is the rapid application one of those EA-type programs that promises an early decision? Particularly if not, I wouldn't read much into the letters. If W&L's schedule is typical, they're now getting into full swing trying to read the ED apps. It's unlikely that anyone but a secretary has even opened most of the RD folders; my guess is that the mailings are probably just part of the drill.

My D asked that question at college fair. She had received several letters and packets from colleges and so she asked them how they could have her name and address. Most said from PSAE, and test surveys that they fill out at ACT and others. Some how these colleges know that the D is a writer and an artist and not an med student or engineer. I am sure these target market tactics are saving them money. I told my D that they must see her as a potential match or she wold not be getting the packets.

Washington and Lee does not offer EA- 2 rounds of ED though with first round of notification typical of most highly selective schools- decision shortly before Christmas. The school has an undergrad. acceptance rate of 27% with 40% coming from ED.

Interestingly, both twins have applied- D, who has SAT scores within range and higher GPA has not received anything in follow-up. Believe that is what set this thought process in motion.
