W&L Regular Decision 2024

Didn’t see a thread for Regular Decision, so I made one!

According to the W&L website, they offer financial aid to only 32 international students a year. Keeping this in mind, I wonder if an international applicant, who has applied for financial aid, and who did not make it to the list of 200 finalists for the Johnson Scholarship, has any chance for being offered admission in RD. I would think the chances are none, to very slim, if any.

My son is still waiting for his Decision Response, Does anyone knows when should we receive it?

I received mine on Friday, March 14th, but it may be due to the Johnson results.

@OverseasFather
I wouldn’t be so pessimistic. I’ve actually got the Johnson scholarship as an international student, and I can tell you that I was the only international finalist who was actually on campus during the Johnson weekend, though there were also 5-7 (I don’t remember the exact number) doing the interviews on-line.
That means that even in the worst case scenario, there are still spots for 25 international students to be admitted with aid

@ZacharyK
Can you tell me more about Johnson Scholarship, what does it consist of, what did you do to become a finalist as an international student. Also, if you don’t mind can you tell me more about your application, about what you included (If possible your grades/SATs/ECAs and when did you apply (ED/EA/RD).

@Babyoda14me
Sure thing. Here’s some info on their website:
https://www.wlu.edu/admissions/scholarships-and-aid/types-of-aid/scholarships/the-johnson-scholarship/
Basically, it’s W&L merit scholarship, covering at least tuition, room and board, plus, if you have a high financial need, additional indirect expenses. (In my case, I was awarded an additional $7,500 a year to cover the costs of travel, textbooks, and personal expenses).

The Johnson scholarship application deadline is in November, but you can apply either ED or RD (I, like most finalists, applied RD). Out of around 3000 applicants, around 135 were named finalists this year. All finalists are invited for an on-campus interview. Although all travel expenses are covered by W&L (=a free trip!), if you mind traveling so far, you can opt for an on-line interview.
Out of those 135 finalists, around 50 are offered the scholarship.

Now, how did I get it… That’s a difficult question to answer. I did have high scores and GPA (790 EBRW, 760 Math, 4.0 also: two subject tests, 800 and 760, although those are not required), but I think the crucial part was, as cliche as it sounds, being really passionate about my fields of interest (languages, classics); it simply shows both during the interviews and in the essays.

When it comes to my extracurriculars, I was a finalist of several national high school olympiads, I teach English at a local university of the third age, I’m a member of a weightlifting club, and I also have some more ‘traditional’ extracurriculars - class president, school newspaper editor, school theater. Besides, I’ve been self-studying Irish Gaelic, which I also mentioned.

Did you get the info through your portal? Anyone know when the RD’s will be released? All this time at home now is making the waiting worse!

8 PM on Friday!!!

What’s the source of that information?

I got an email from Washington and lee a while ago.

The Admissions Committee has reviewed your application, and I am delighted to tell you that you stood out as one of a small set of applicants who seems particularly well matched to Washington and Lee this year. In a pool of over 5,000 candidates, this is a significant accomplishment. As a result, the Admissions Committee enthusiastically expects to formally offer you admission in March.

So does this mean I got into the university

@Bervely7 Yes! Congratulations!

An email from Washington and Lee.

Thanks

Does this mean if I got an email saying that I am getting my answer on Friday at 8 PM that I did not get in?

Nope. It means just what it says, i.e. you will get your answer on Friday at 8 PM.

And that @Bervely7 passed the admission process with flying colors!

Son accepted! So excited for him! And it also makes the WL decisions from Villanova & Wake Forest seem really insignificant (yet, still puzzling).

My son also got wait listed for Wake (which was a top choice) but got into W&L and Villanova early action. I will never understand the college application process.

But W&L doesn’t have an early action option. Only EDI and EDII. And yes, the college acceptance process really is a crap shoot. You never know what factors lead to an acceptance or a rejection.
