How difficult is it to get into the business school? I have read the W&M website and know that admission is competitive. I am currently deciding between Boston College (CSOM), Villanova (VSB), and W&M. It is tough to reject two sure things only to go through another application two years down the line at W&M and possibly not end up in the business school. Are there any statistics on acceptance percentages for W&M students who apply?. I think I saw a 75 or 77% acceptance for W&M on another website.

Per BusinessWeek, it’s 71%. The application process was very simple… I didn’t have to fill out anything other than basic personal info (no essays or anything). My understanding is they just take everyone’s GPA in descending order and cut off when they reach the target class size. The cutoff varies, but you certainly need to be above 2.75. I’d say if you can keep a 3.25 for your first year, you’ll have a pretty good shot at getting in.

Scouty, the Mason School of Business doesn’t enjoy turning students away. There is simply more demand for majoring in Business than there is space.

Java is correct. Currently the application process is fairly simply. You apply as a second-semester sophomore. You have to have completed the five pre-req courses (accounting, stats, calc, microecon and macroecon), you have to be in the process of obtaining junior standing (54 credits) and then they go by GPA. Generally the cut-off has been around a 3.2 (certainly nothing unobtainable) and the admit rate has been fairly high.

They also do let those who are not admitted apply again the following semester.

You are welcome to contact Jen Dhanke in the Mason School to get more information on their admission process.

While become a business major at W&M isn’t a “sure thing” it’s also far from impossible and because our business school exists within the liberal arts environment and business majors aren’t locked in a business silo, we don’t admit students to majors as part of the freshman application process.

Hello, W&M Admission, I just got accepted as a transfer to W&M. Mason School of Business is my ideal place to go, but I am a little bit concerned about my GPA this semester. If by any chance, I don’t get accepted to the business school. Can I be a major in other programs(like economics in Arts and Sciences) and then transfer into the business school in the second semester with good grades? (I really really want to go to the business school…)

In addition to above, which GPA does the admission of the business school consider? The overall GPA from previous years and present(this semester) in college? or only the GPA of Business related classes?

If you don’t get into the B School you can certainly major in something else. They do somtimes let you apply again after a semester at W&M but that could require you to attend an extra semester of college to complete all your requirements. Plus, the spring spaces are much fewer than the fall so the competition might be stiffer.

The GPA they consider if your cumulative GPA (so the GPA that will appear on your final transcript this summer).
