W&M buys the Hospitality House

This is a great location- the hotel has needed to be renovated for a while- I am just really excited about W&M buying this. It has a little over 300 beds (not sure if those are 300 rooms since that is the way you normally count hotels- or if it is 150 rooms with two beds each) but the school will be renovating it and making it into a new student living option. Probably wont' be ready till 2014 would be my guess.

Yes, this is such great news! Article says it will be ready for Fall 2013!

I had missed the part of the article that said ready for fall 13. I saw they weren’t closing it as a hotel until after graduation, so didn’t think it would be ready. I did stay there last spring and while in my mind it was badly in need of renovation (have those bedspreads been changed since the 1970s?), as I think about it, it needed renovation to be a 3 star or higher class hotel. There probably won’t be as much to do to make it a dorm. But I do wonder what they will do with the bar, restaurant, front desk, etc. Certainly are some interesting options.

What a great idea! Terrific location, obviously. The rooms are generously-sized. And even though the place needed a big-time renovation, the bathrooms will be far better (bigger, in better shape) than the typical dorm bathrooms.

Now what options remain for decent hotels in walking distance of the school? I’ve never stayed at Governor’s Inn, the CW budget option which I believe is seasonal, but that’s a walkable distance. If you don’t mind a bit of a hike, the Fairfield Inn at the corner of Bypass and Richmond is in good shape. And the Williamsburg Lodge and Inn are walkable as well, though not really convenient.

tjmom - hopefully they keep the bar a bar!

I am very happy the nightlife options right next to campus are expanding significantly, even though I didn’t really frequent those places since I lived in Ludwell jr/sr year.

This place was a crappy hotel, except for the location. This is a good move for W&M.

It’s a good decision. Thanks to all the new rooms, they’ve eliminated the housing wait list for this spring’s housing selection.

WOW- that is BIG news. So have people already picked their rooms for next year? I am just wondering how people will pick to live there. I am more than a few years past living in a dorm, but I sure would have picked that location if I could have!

^There are several steps to housing selection, and I’m not sure how many of them have already started. There’s fraternity housing, block housing, same-room signup, etc. The actual choosing of individual rooms doesn’t start until April 10, so I’m not sure how many will end up choosing to live at the Hospitality House.
