W&M Chance Me?

I applied to William and Mary Early Decision as an out of state student. What are my chances of admission?

Up until this last summer I lived in Williamsburg, VA, and I wrote my common app essay about moving before my senior year. My supplement essay was about being an introverted cheerleader.

GPA- 3.8
ACT- 28
4 AP classes
4 Honor classes
4 years of varsity cheerleading on several different teams
5 varsity letters in cheerleading
Team co-captain in 11th grade
~70 volunteer hours as a middle school cheer coach
Paid work as a gymnastics coach and sales associate
NHS
NSHSS
Slam Poetry club
Military family, moved right before senior year

Only 30% of the undergrads at Wm. & Mary are non-residents.

Your ACT is low for an out-of-state applicant.

Class rank & strength of course schedule are other important factors.

Your teacher recs may not be sufficiently enthusiastic since you have been at your current school for well less than one academic year.

Why Wm. & Mary ? Any special reason ? What do you plan to study ?

You would certainly be accepted by many well respected schools including, for example, Auburn University & Clemson University (if you prefer Southern schools).

I chose W&M because I’m a Williamsburg native and would love to go back home. My teacher recs came from the school I attended in VA, so they should be strong. I’m ranked in the top quarter which is still low for WM. I know it’s a long shot, but I tried to let my personality shine in my application as they take a holistic approach to applications. I plan on studying biology and secondary education. It’s possible I could be considered in state as I just moved a couple months ago, but I’m not sure. I’m mainly wondering if I even stand a chance at being admitted since I applied early decision.

Certainly you have a chance of being admitted. But whether or not you are a resident is a significant factor.

The Common Data Set for the College of Wm. & Mary lists state residency & standardized test scores as “very important” admissions’ factors.

Ask your parent who is in the military what their “state of legal residence” is. It could be different from where you are living now, and I hope it is Virginia.

It was a good idea to apply ED and I think that will raise your chances. I’m sorry that you had to move before senior year—that had to be really tough. Best wishes!

He is technically a resident of VA, hopefully that helps! Thanks!

Good luck! William and Mary offers a fantastic education in a beautiful place. Applying ED should be a good boost, and Virginia residency could make all the difference. Please check back in with us and let us know how it went!

I love the topic of your supplemental essay. Introverted cheerleader. Could be a great read full of contrasts. Interesting choice and a good one for a school that values writing so much.

Did you get in???
