W&M Class of 2023 RD

At W&M, air conditioning is definitely nice to have the first 3-4 weeks of the school year, then it’s very rarely an issue, and only for a day or two here or there. The spring semester ends about a week into May. The average last freeze is the first week of April, I think, though winters are relatively mild, much milder than even Northern Virginia. There are cold snaps, and occasionally snow, but they are usually brief, and it’s often warm in winter as well. Really the weather is a big plus, and a few hot weeks without AC is a minor issue, unless there are health issues, etc.

whatmattersmost, thank you for your thoughtful input! I really appreciate it on behalf of my daughter. Brown is her highest hope, so it helps to know your daughter considered both schools and yet is still happy at W&M. My daughter is now a “Monroe Scholar;” which is an honor, but we are waiting on financial aid and hoping it brings the cost down for us. Thank you again!

@whatmattersmost Thank you for the great info and insight! My daughter has an acceptance to W&M as a Monroe Scholar and is awaiting decisions from a handful of other schools. We have yet to visit W&M so she doesn’t have a feel for whether the school will be “the one” but we do know they have a great program for what she wants to study.

Can you share any more about how your daughter overcame the “analysis paralysis”? Did she attend accepted students days at W&M and/or Brown?

We recd. the formal letter in the mail but no financial aid information yet. Seems Like VA colleges don’t give much of merit based aid.

I don’t know if this is me overthinking or if it’s by actually something so if you all could give me opinions, that would be great. Today, around noon, I received an email from William and Mary’s financial aid office. They basically said they need more information and such. Is this just me overthinking?

Daughter delighted to be accepted as a Monroe Scholar - it’s her first choice school! OOS 1540 SAT, 4.0uw, 4.58w, 12 AP’s, 800 subject tests. Not sure how we’ll make it work financially though.

Congrats…

Same thoughts on affordability. Wish Monroe included instate tuition rate…

Let’s hope for the best…

Curious, What were your daughters impression of the Club Soccer team? D18 is a swimmer and might go the Club path.

What were your daughters impressions of the Mock Trial tryouts you mentioned etc…

Any rumors on which day W&M releases decisions for RD?

My guess is Friday, March 22nd at 5:00. (I don’t have any inside information, just going on the release dates back to 2016.) Wishing everyone the best of luck :)>-

That is outstanding news. The Monroe Scholars get the best freshman housing!

My daughter loves the club team. In fact, it is as much social as it is athletic. The team has “date parties” and “mixers” with other club teams. They also do “big sisters.” It’s also been a great way to relieve stress. She’s played away games at campuses throughout the east coast, Elon, Georgetown, Mary Washington, and that’s been fun, too. Many of her actual sorority sisters are athletes and either okay club or university level, so there is an athletic/social fusion that is great for her.

As far as mock trial, she said it would be impossible for her to dedicate the time required while playing soccer, pledging a sorority, and getting academically adapted to the intensity of study. Most kids trying out were from highly competitive high school programs, so pretty much what she was used to seeing. And about half who tried out made it.

She attended both Brown and W&M accepted student’s days. She’s been wearing Brown gear since she was in middle school, so I really thought it would go that way. But, the campuses are very different (Brown is more of an urban setting). She said the attention on undergraduate education and the “feel” of W&M, which was more how she had imagined an “Ivy League” campus to be were the biggest points. The traditions at W&M were a big attraction, too. But, seriously, the student body did it. The kids are really something different, almost all we encountered were extremely talented at many things. Again, she’s a state champion debater, soccer player, and artist…yet she’s in the Honors Physics track at W&M. Lots of right-left-brain kids there just like that.

And, you should tell your daughter that William and Mary actually turned down the Ivy League.

It sounds like your daughter has found a great fit at W&M. The way you describe things Im sure D18 would find similar enjoyment and success at W&M with the overall size, location and fit with the description of the student body you develope so well.

I can only imagine the club swimming and other likely considerations as good social extensions worth pursuing at the college. I equally appreciate your insight into the Mock Trial experience as it helps get a sense of what it takes. Finding a solid program of study and a mock trial team that’s a good fit are two considerations that will likely weigh mostly come Decision Day yet the intricate pieces that you have described over time will likely be given more weight in the end.

Thanks Much

If you don’t get a postcard, are you not in? Anyone who got a postcard not get in?

Postcard means you’re in. I think all of us who got a postcard also already received the email acceptance. Tons of kids will be accepted on the regular decision date coming up. Only a small percent get the early RD admit/postcard.

Not all of us… I received a postcard and nervously waiting on formal notification.

My son also waiting on formal notification after having received the postcard.

Maybe just the kids who are Monroe Scholars got formal notice after the postcard.

@whatmattersmost How is club soccer at W&M? Is it very time consuming? Are coaches understanding that sometimes work gets in the way? Is your daughter able to easily balance school work with soccer? I played varsity soccer in high school and want to keep playing in college but I’m slightly concerned that the club level it might be too much of a time commitment at a rigorous school such as William and Mary.
