I'm not thrilled that my d's EC has decided to meet tonight as scheduled, because I'd rather see her have a chance to pack and get gas before leaving tomorrow. Dorms will be closed at noon on Friday, 9/26. If anyone lives in the area or has current information, can they keep us updated on weather conditions? Wishing safe travels to all our kids.

Thanks for the link. I accidentally hung up on the automated call so didn’t hear the info. My son had already called to fill me in, but I wanted the official word. My S has 2 options of where to go, but has friends who are completely stranded! He’s trying to work out a plan that will include the friends, but it looks like it means leaving in the morning.

Email from W&M Student Affairs:

DD left around 4:30. We now live out of state, so she is going home with some friends. She had several offers for rides and beds. They are stuck in traffic and not even to Richmond yet.

Thanks for the traffic info, cap. I hope your D made it to Richmond by now. I hate to even think about traffic tomorrow. I wish I had seen the email about staying at a motel before S made his plans; I think that I would have encouraged that option. I just assumed the whole area was being evacuated.

As of 15 minutes ago, they were sitting in a thunderstorm outside of Richmond. Only the campus is being evacuated, not the city. Several of my girls’ friends are staying with friends who live off campus and not even leaving town at this point.

We used to live in NoVA, so there are tons of friends up that way and several others have offered to go do pickup runs if necessary.

My S is going to his cousin at Mary Washington, we live at the Jersey Shore, didn’t make much sense to take the train to another hurricane target.

Everyone can feel free to check the W&M home page ([William & Mary](http://www.wm.edu)) as well as W&M News on social media ([William & Mary News - University - Williamsburg | Facebook](William & Mary News), [Twitter](http://twitter.com/#!/WMNews)). We wish all of our students and families all the best in finding a safe haven.

as anyone reading this probably already knows due to the emergency notification system. Apparently 80 percent of Williamsburg is still without power. Here’s hoping that the area is restored soon. It seems as if Williamsburg was particularly hard hit. Good decision to evacuate the students - thank you, W&M admins!

I think it was in 2003 that a hurricane tore through the area and closed the college for perhaps a week. My d1 had to change sleeping arrangements several times. I hope d3 has not worn out her welcome with d2 in Charlottesville.

My OOS son is a freshman and went home with his roommate of 4 days to Richmond. I am wondering should I start driving and go get him (7 hours away)? I wouldn’t be surprised if the dorms were closed all week. Any other freshman parents out there wondering the same thing?

In 2003, my d1 was in the awkward position of going to her then-boyfriend’s home for the storm, meeting his parents for the first time. We all agreed after the first few days that it would be better for her to travel by train to her grandparents’ house instead of imposing indefinitely on the bf’s parents.

Though I don’t usually think that parents need to be in contact with their kid’s roommate’s parents, I think it would be fine under these circumstances to call and ask if they’d like your son to go elsewhere after a certain point; say if the college announces tomorrow that it will still be a few more days. This could be a bonding experience for your son and his roommate. It’s something he’ll tell next year’s freshmen about, for sure. Hope all our kids get back to school soon.

Article from the Richmond paper this morning on W&M kids finding a home with in state friend from their dorm:

[Irene, and kids, arrive | Richmond Times-Dispatch](http://www2.timesdispatch.com/news/virginia-politics/2011/aug/28/tdmet01-irene-and-kids-arrive-ar-1268862/)

Sounds like it has been an enjoyable experience thus far for these folks :)

Fun article, KandKsmom - thanks for posting it. I wonder how the author will be able to keep enough food on hand if his five guests have to stay much beyond Tuesday.

I’m sure they’ll reschedule convocation as soon as possible. It’s such a great tradition at W & M. I always enjoy the video of the freshmen walking through the Wren Building and being greeted by the student body on the other side.

Twocollegekids,

We are also 7 hours away and DD is getting antsy where she is. Luckily, I think she can go house hopping if necessary and spare the drive, unless they decided early tomorrow to close for the whole week.

House-hopping isn’t really possible-he’s a freshman and doesn’t really know anyone well enough. Since my husband and I are finally (we thought) empty nesters, we planned a vacation out of the country. “Supposed” to leave this week…If W&M doesn’t open dorms by Wednesday, I cannot leave. So complicated–I thought once my kids were in college, my life would simplify. WRONG.

My daughter is an OOS from CA. While she had several options to go to the homes of friends in NOVA, it seemed that those homes were still going to be in the predicted path of the hurricane. In the end, she and 2 friends traveled on Thurs. pm to Charlottesville, where they were able to stay with a friend who had graduated from W&M last May.
