I read this in the FLAT HAT, a publication which William and Mary publishes. Vaguely, it said that applications are up at a record high for a second year in a row.

I decided to check out, http://www.collegeboard.com to see what they said and CB reports that W&M accepted 31% of applicants for Fall 2006. I know this number is very new because when I was transferring for Spring 2006, they had the old stats up which said 35% for Fall 2005. This is amazingly lower for just one year difference!

Thinking about this further, Cornell reports about 27% and Harvard 9%. Colleges are certainly trying to get more and more picky. I remember applying to colleges and Harvard was at 14 or 16% in the Fall 2003 statistics when I was finding schools for Fall 2004... so weird.

Err, are you sure that the 31% admittance number is for the fall of 2006? I don't really understand how they can know what percentage of applicants were admitted when the admissions office is still entering some applications into the database (according to the Flat Hat article).

William and Mary is now done with accepting people for fall 2006, and people like Princeton Review, CollegeBoard, Petersons, Fiske... etc. make sure to call all their colleges right away as soon as their numbers are in so they can meet deadlines to publish newer editions of their guidebooks.

The number is 31% for Fall 2006 admission, the number could of course, go up or down, but I was just surprised that it went down since Fall 2005 when it was 35%.

You can check this data by simply going to a bookstore and looking at the 2005 edition of Collegeboard, where it actually does say 35% and this number, 31% is new.

The same goes with all other colleges, I guess they update their figures around this time of year.

I agree with soccerguy. They have not made their final decisions for Fall of 2006 -- impossible. My entire county just sent them the mid-year reports on Feb. 24 for probably a thousand applicants. Plus it says that SAT scores have to be sent to their office by March 1 (today).

Hmm. Then perhaps I am wrong about it being for Fall 2006, it must be for Fall 2005. Then this just must mean that Fall 2004's data was used in their latest edition, they must be a year behind?

I have the 2005 edition of CollegeBoard's publication and it states 35%.

I saw somewhere that 2/3rd of applications came from out of state. If that is true, that means approx 6000 applicants. Only 1/3rd of admitted students are from out of state, so that is approx 1200. So assuming any of that is at all accurate, the admit rate for out of state students is around 20%?
