Greetings Everyone,

I am perhaps one of the biggest noobs to exist when it comes to applying to colleges, but I need sort of a guideline here. If I want to apply to William and Mary, what should I be doing first?

All I can think of is the following:

Fill out the Common Application

Complete the essay

Letters of Recommendation

Sending SAT scores to their sat number

Am I forgetting something here?!?!?!

And also, for any college in general… how do you pay for the applications process? Do you enclose a check with the common application?

Yes… please help me!

<a href=“Admission & Aid | William & Mary”>Admission & Aid | William & Mary;
"Application Requirements

William and Mary is part of the Common Application group. A complete application includes:
The Common Application, complete with a high school transcript and counselor recommendation attached to the School Report form
The William and Mary Supplement to the Common Application
Your SAT (W&M’s code is 5115) and/or ACT (W&M’s code is 4344) scores
Application fee payment, or a fee waiver request (Note: Students who apply online may pay the fee by credit card. Students who submit a paper application by postal mail should staple a check to the application forms.)
The Common Application Midyear Report to be sent later by your guidance counselor
The In-State Tuition Form for Virginia residents. (More information about in-state residency requirements can be found here.) "

hope this helps!

The best way to pay is by credit card in my opinion.

It appears scutler’s post covered all of this but just to reiterate:
Don’t forget to have your school send them an official transcript. Also give the midyear report to your counselor so he/she can fill it out and send it on time.

Also, do remember to complete the supplement W&M has in addition to the common app.

Hey thanks Scutler.

What is

“The William and Mary Supplement to the Common Application”

and what is the

"The Common Application Midyear Report to be sent later by your guidance counselor "

The supplement probably contains an additional essay or two or three that’s more specific to W&M college.

The midyear report is a part of the common app that your school must send to the college after first semester is over (it’s what they put your first semester grades and updated class rank on).

Hmm.. do you just request the supplement directly from admissions then? Thanks GoldShadow.

If you do the common application online, you have to select which schools you are applying to with it. It should give you links to the supplements of the schools you selected. I’m sure it’s available for download on the college’s website as well, however.

it looks like their supplement for this year isn’t out yet, but this looks like where you will get them from:
<a href=“Admission & Aid | William & Mary”>Admission & Aid | William & Mary;

My D will be going to W&M in (less than 3 weeks!) The essay for the supplement is optional and the topic is very broad. There are other threads that talk about whether or not previous applicants submitted it. Also, I recall that sending a teacher (as opposed to counselor) recommendation is optional, so don’t send more than one.

I suggest just calling Admissions, telling them of your interest, and getting on their mailing list and e-mail list for info. They will be happy to accommodate you.

The catch for W&M is uniqueness, by far. During the admissions process, you have got to convince those people that you are very, very unique. Keep that in mind when you are applying. :)

I lived overseas all my life in 10 different countries. I am a resident of Virginia though if that helps at all. One more thing, I want to give my personal information out so I can be on their mailing list for prospective students. I want to get their packet if possible. Couldn’t find it. Can anyone redirect me? Thanks!

BTW, you sure you only need one recommendation letter.. from just a teacher?

My d was on campus just last week, and she was told that the supplement will be available online at the end of August. Only the GC’s rec is required, but a teacher rec is optional. I suggest sending your strongest teacher rec (of course), and possibly a second if and only if it will add something to your app that won’t be covered in your GC/teacher recs. I haven’t looked at W & M’s app - if it’s adamant about only one optional rec, then I’d limit myself to that. So choose wisely!

Thank you frazzled.

Say, is there a link to give out personal information out so I can be on their mailing list for “prospective students.”
