W&M or GTown

I am visiting both soon. Any suggestions?

I’ve visited georgetown numerous times and I was just at w&m this past weekend. The campuses are very different. georgetown is, obviously, in DC and has the whole georgetown area around it - great for shopping and a really cool college town atmosphere. w&m is bordered by colonial williamsburg and clearly has less of a city feel. w&m’s campus is more wood-sy and more scenic. I like both their campuses but they honestly have very different feels.

While in Williamsburg, definitely take the chance to drop by some classes and stroll around Colonial Williamsburg!

It depends on your personal style. We visited Gtown first, where D. visited with a HS friend who had just started there. He was doing well, enjoying new friendships. The nation’s capitol was very exciting for my D who wants to study government. We got on the train and headed for W & M, where she found a much more sympatico environment. She loved the study lounges, the student energy, and the campus. She knows that she can do coursework in DC while at W & M, as well as internships. She was accepted by Gtown in Dec, but had to wait until last week to hear from Wm and M. She’s still invested in W & M, and I think it will be right for her.

W&M and Georgetown are mostly different for their locations and campus vibes, IMO (roughly equal academics).

W&M does have a program in Washington where you can study for a semester (government related classes) if you wish.

hey. I got into both schools to but quickly dropped Gtown because of financial reasons and cause its about 5 minutes from home.
I dont know what school you applied to, but i got into SFS, which if you are going into that area I would seriously consider GT cause of its esteem.

In the end though, undergrad doesnt really matter all that much, and how I see it is the money I save in undergrad can be put towards attending a good grad school… if thats what your plans are.

GOOD LUCK!

I like the castles at Gtown.

georgetown all the way. i love william and mary, but it can’t compare (academically and socially) to gtown. the campuses are both lovely, but gtown is right by DC with easy access to loads of museums, shopping, historical sites, etc. forgo williamsburg. plus as i said georgetown is much more selective and prestigous than william and mary. an undergrad degree from gtown will get you very VERY far. it looks better to both future employers and graduate schools. good luck!

In what way is Georgetown far superior to W&M academically?
Georgetown and W&M are completely different locations.
Georgetown has a significant graduate population that W&M does not.
I kind of laughed that between Georgetown and W&M, you picked Georgetown as the school with access to historical sites.
Do you really choose which school to attend on which is more selective? Honestly?
Georgetown is ranked the same as UVA in US News… so I am kind of confused as to where this massive “prestige” is coming from that Georgetown has and W&M doesn’t.

Can you tell us more about your circumstances? What you want to study and whether you’re in-state or not makes a huge difference. If you’re in-state then I don’t think that it’s worth the extra tuition to go to Georgetown regardless of whatever added prestige there may be. If you plan to work in DC then most employers are well aware of the Virginia schools as well.

Instate WM.

OOS Gtown or WM if you can afford either.

Environment is key here. High energy DC or laid back 'Burg /Va Beach trips. Actual teaching/education -slight edge to W&M. Perceived prestige- slight edge to G’town. Cant lose either way, be true to yourself and it will work out.

Go to Georgetown! (daughter is on waitlist and we need open spots!)
