I am a chemical engineering major with a minor in math stats. I am not doing well in my orgo 1 class and am considering taking a W. How will this affect my chances of getting in to a masters program for nuclear engineering? My GPA is a 3.4 but would probably go up to a 3.5 if I dropped orgo. I have done an internship and a co-op (but not really in nuclear engineering), have a solid resume (lots of volunteer work, on campus involvement, etc) and am in an accelerated MBA program and will receive an MBA before applying to MS programs in NE. I have never withdrawn from a class before.
Thanks!
A single W is not going to kill your chances.
Agree with above. A W is far from a killer as long as it isn’t a habit. It’s pretty common for a student to bite off more than they can chew and end up taking a W, and as long as you don’t take a bunch more, it at least shows you learn from a mistake.
I will also point out that things like volunteering are not likely to have any impact on your chance of admissions. In fact, your admissions chances will be considerably worse than if you had used all of those hours used for volunteering to instead work in a research lab as an undergraduate. An MBA won’t matter either.
