Is a "W" on your transcript (freshman year) going to loook really bad? Even if it is something that has nothing to do with your major??

No, a "W" is not going to look "really bad". It is going to bring your LSAC GPA down but it isn't going to have the dire affects that (I hope) the letter grade you would have received, had you not dropped the course, would have had.

it actually isnt counted on your gpa at all...at least not in my school

A trend of W's is bad. A W which puts you into a severely-less-than-normal courseload is bad. An isolated W isn't that big a deal.

W's do not affect your GPA, where in fact the grade would.

Sorry, I misunderstood-- it isn't counted towards your LSAC GPA (which ultimately is what matters).

But yeah, don't try to get too many W's.

Try to keep all of your bad grades or withdrawals in your first couple years. A solid upward trend and a high LSAT will still make you competitive for much of the t14 and certainly the rest of the top 25 or so.
