W (withdrawl) notation on transcript

According to the engineering department, dropping a class after week 6 results in a W (withdrawal) notation on my transcript. So my question is, How bad is it to have it on my transcript; What if I'm planning on going to graduate school? Have you received a w notation on your transcript? what was your excuse for dropping? Will it effect my financial aid even if I still have more than 12 units? Any answers would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

According to the official University Catalogue:

After the sixth week of instruction, students may add or drop a class only with the permission of the instructor and the student’s academic dean. Permission to drop after the sixth week can be granted only if the student is not failing the course and is not subject to disqualification, and only if dropping the course would be to the educational benefit of the student, of the class as a whole, or both.

You might want to ask the Dean.

I think a W on a transcript is likely to be perceived as better than an F and worse than a C, unless you have a very good reason–you were quarantined with flu, broke an arm or a leg and couldn’t do the work, your Dad was laid off and you had to work, you got an unexpected incredible opportunity, etc.

I wouldn’t worry about…I have no personal experience though but from [Student Doctor Network|An educational community for students and doctors spanning all the health professions.](http://www.studentdoctor.net) the general consensus is as long as you don’t have a trend of W’s you’ll be fine.
