Hi
I am completing the financial aid for DD, I noticed the colleges asked for nonfiling statement.
DD coached in 2015 and earned about $250 from the county, however, we never received the W2, I think at the time, they did not ask her to fill out the SS, (she got the W2 for 2016), I think she does not have to file income tax, but I assume we have to tell the colleges that she did make some money, but what can I do with the form 4506T and how can I get the W2 now? I assume if we can get the 2015 W2, it will likely be forever.
Any suggestion on what can we do? thanks
An employer isn’t required to issue a W2 for $250. She may not have been required to file a return (depending on other income). If it asks how much she earned, just write in $250. She may or may not be required to provide a transcript of non-filer, and you get that from the IRS.
@twoinanddone thanks for the quick response. How do I get it from IRS if she has not filed the tax return.
I don’t understand. The non-filer’s transcript shows that she did not file a return.
If the employer issued a W-2 for 2016 it is likely that they did issue one in 2015 (it could have got lost, misdelivered, thought to be junk mail, etc.) or should have.
From IRS instructions for W-2 (addressed to employer):
Only in very limited situations will you not have to file
Form W-2. This may occur if you were not required to
withhold any income tax, social security tax, or Medicare
tax and you paid the employee less than $600
I would contact contact the employer to ask for a copy of the W-2, and also the college, explaining the situation, and your efforts to follow through. I would think you can still get a nonfilers statement because that hasn’t changed, and maybe it’s correct that she didn’t need to file.
If it was county employment, I can’t imagine they employed her without her SS#.
She said the earnings were $250. Most employers won’t issue one until $600 is earned.
A lot of referees and coaches are paid as independent contractors and receive 1099s rather than W2s. or if they don’t earn enough, no documentation at all.
@alooknac yes, it was county and they didn’t ask for SS# when she was hired…she coached skating
I figured since they issued a W-2 the next year that was most likely how they treated it in 2015.
According to my quote from the IRS, if it was in fact wages, SS should have been withheld and W-2 should have been filed.
In my job I see MANY W-2’s for earnings under $600.00 because SS has to be withheld.
If she was hired as a contractor the situation is different.
I don’t mean to contradict your D about the SS# but I know kids don’t always understand the process for their first job. Maybe the county had her SS# from her application. Maybe they did treat her as a contractor. She’s going to have to ask them.
@alooknac thanks you are right. My younger DD teaches swimming and her income was withheld since the first pay check…but there was no deduction for my older DD and anyway, I am going to file the 4506T and write to the college that we never received the W2 as her income is less than $600.
