I just wanted to start an information sharing thread for new freshmen -sept. 2009 and their parents/significant others. The kids have a facebook site started. My D has just found a roommate thru facebook. They are also planning a meet up at the end of June in NYC. So feel free to share!;)

our D will be attending WC in the fall and we will be there during freshman orientation we are from the OC.

Hi! I know of a young lady from Pasadena who will also be a freshman and a young man from Pasadena will be a soph. RA next year. Welcome to the Wagner thread!!!

So----

My D loves Wagner!!! After the 1st semester she was sure she was in the right place. There are some kids who didn’t particularly like it because of the small size. D says the kids either loved it or hated it. She is very happy with the teachers and the quality of instruction.

The shows so far were Tommy and Brigadoon with Little Women and Beauty and the Beast to finish the year. There were several dramas and the dance project also. D is a little disappointed not to be cast but freshmen were only eligible for the 2nd semester shows. Casting seems to lean towards seniority when possible.

D is also having trouble getting a voice teacher who she feels is teaching her something, as opposed to just rehearsing audition songs. The freshmen get whoever is left over after the upper classmen have been assigned voice teachers. She had one last semester who couldn’t play piano, worked off cd’s and felt so much time was wasted trying to find the music that she didn’t learn much from them. This is one area that she needs most improvement in, so she has moved to a private voice teacher in Manhattan. She loves her but is very expensive. Hopefully, she can get someone thru Wagner when the seniors graduate who she knows is very good. That was our only disappointment. There are some freshmen who got very good voice teachers. Luck of the draw I guess.

I would love to hear from anyone else their experiences of their kids 1st semester at Wagner. Please share!!

My D has gotten a great voice teacher for next semester. She polled the older kids on who had a very good voice teacher and how they worked. She tracked this one down and asked if she had openings in her schedule for next semester since the seniors were leaving. She did and was accepted by the teacher. She was pro-active in finding someone who would work for her. If she waited again to be just assigned to anyone she might have been disappointed again. Unfortunately freshmen don’t have this option. They are assigned.

Also, Beauty and the Beast was exceptionally good!!! Acting was outstanding by Gaston, LeFou, Lumiere, and the beast was so real the kids in the audience cried or cowered under programs.(pretty funny). Belle was outstanding vocally and the rest of the cast was very good. My D said they were having an off nite and the opening nite was much better. But I couldn’t tell. I thought it was an exceptional production. Best this year. The sets were also pretty impressive. The other musicals were Tommy- Brigadoon- and Little Women. All of them good. They also had 3 dramas and a dance project. I didn’t have the chance to see these.

If anyone has anything to add to this Wagner thread please feel free to share their info with others. I have received many questions from perspective students who don’t know much about Wagner and are looking for good accurate information. Don’t be shy!! ;)
