wait.......... 39 days left?!?!?! (2011 Incoming Freshmen Concerns)

As summer break is slowly coming to its end, it seems like all the incoming freshmen are having minor panic attacks over everything we have to prepare for... or maybe that's just me haha. so i decided to start this thread so we have an organized way of asking our random questions and just chatting about school stuff :)

So I'll go first..

I never got my ID at orientation because they said we could also get it in the fall so... my question is: I know its in the UCen but where exactly is the ID place?

it’s in the “middle” on the second floor (floor level with storke plaza)…hard to explain but you’ll find out

their hours are limited, so you should ask around

dont worry about what to bring…there’s best buy, kmart, costco, bed bath and beyond, airport, hotels, and a ghetto (“old town goleta”) all within three miles :)

Almost everyone seems to have a bicycle :o
Considering that I’ll be placed at FT, would it be a must to buy a bicycle?

Also, is 15 minutes enough passing time to get from one class to another?

Lastly, I was unable to find FT during my orientation session…honestly, is it really that far away from the heart of the campus?

siglio21: yeah I know, I’m gonna have to call to see when they’re open :frowning:

Does anyone know if I’ll be able to get into the dining commons without it if I can’t get it my first day? I know a good amount of people didn’t go to orientation so I’m sure I would be able to?

syedmannan: It’s definitely a good idea to bring a bike unless you want to take the bus or walk really far haha. As for passing times, you should be fine! There are maps of the campus online to check out if you want to compare the two. As for the distance from FT to campus, its like a little more than a mile. You probably wouldn’t have encountered it while at orientation unless you drove. Hope that helped :)

Has anyone ever used ILL? The Inter Library Loan thing? How do I do it…

You need your ID to get in. Just check with them and see when theyre open and get it done ASAP! :)

so its a separate office that I need to go into?

not really an office, just go to the UCen and find the photo ID place. and bring 20 bucks!

oh ok sorry! i thought you were talking about the ILL thing

do i need a bike light thing for night?

No you don’t need a bike light, although they are very cute

legally I think you do…

I remember having a front and rear light an getting s*** for it.
cops don’t really enforce it near UCSB.

downtown I’ve heard of people getting tickets for this, though (i.e. not having a light at night).

yeah its technically illegal not to have one so i was wondering i needed it because i didnt remember seeing them on any bikes.

i was also wondering, in the res halls, what are the first few days like after move in? what do we do?

Well there is welcome week for starters. They pretty much have a long list of events that are held the entire week for freshman to attend. Last year there were ice cream socials, a concert at storke plaza featuring major lazer, canoeing in the lake… I forgot the rest but you really just make a buttload of friends

Why do they not have Daft Punk play? T_T

i feel like most people want to party the whole week. is that the case?

You can get all your books, once you have those you could get ahead if you have difficult classes (or just want to get ahead), look into clubs you want to join, there are a lot of seminars hosted by your major that you should check out. Don’t forget to go to the beach everyday. To be honest, you SHOULD get all your partying out of the way in that week before the quarter starts, so you don’t slip the first week.

you can get a ticket for loitering there lol

Pretty crazy.

awesome, thanks guys. :)

so who else is excited for the first day?!?! who started packing already?
