wait-list acceptances

hey guys ...long time since i've posted here. ughhh princeton, my top choice, waitlisted me. i got into harvard, yale, and others, though...but i still want princeton =[ i was wondering if anybody has been accepted from the waitlist so far? if not, does anybody know when they start calling from the waitlist or waitlist statistics this year? thanks[= [=

Historically, the Ivies announce yield roughly a week after May 1, and, if they have room, start taking people off the wait list at about the same time. Last year, Princeton took close to 150 people from about 1000 who chose to stay on the WL, but in recent years it’s been as low as 0 from the wait list. All depends on yield.

Actually, last year it was 60.

http://registrar.princeton.edu/university_enrollment_sta/common_cds2009.pdf

The previous year (the first class to be accepted after dropping early decision) it was 148. That first year after getting rid of the early admission program the University didn’t quite know what to expect. The second year (last year) they had a much better idea and the number of students admitted from the wait list returned to a more normal figure.

I would guess that the total number of students admitted off the wait list this year will be somewhere between 30 and 60 but we won’t know until the new class arrives next September. Last year was the first year of the new Bridge Year Program which artificially depressed the yield rate by about 2% and resulted in 20 more students being taken off the wait list. Unless the total number of students in the Bridge Year Program is increased this year, that effect will disappear. Those 20 will now be returning to campus next fall and will join the Class of 2014 balancing the 20 who will take their places overseas. If I were forced to guess, I would choose 40 as the likely number to be taken.

Those are tough odds and I hope that the OP will have a better shot than that. With the wonderful choices you already have you must be a very strong candidate and will probably have a better than average chance on the wait list.

Good luck to all who are on the wait list. It’s not fun but at least there’s a chance you may be pleasantly surprised with good news.

Do the 50 and 148 figures also include the people who were admitted off the waiting list but chose not to attend Princeton?

Yes. I believe those numbers do include students on the wait list who were offered admission but turned down the offer. Princeton doesn’t “pre-screen” its wait list as some institutions do. In other words, it doesn’t ask whether the wait list student will accept the offer before making it. Some schools do this in order to get 100% matriculation from these students. That being said, most students who decide to remain on the wait list really do want to attend Princeton rather than the other schools to which they were accepted so the matriculation rate from offers made to wait listed students is very high.

thuglife, where did you accept to in the meantime?

Princeton was my top choice as well. I am going to Caltech for now, but still am realyl interested in getting off the wait-list.

If anyone gets in through waitlist plz post!

Good luck to you all!

princeton accepted one of my friends from jersey a few hours back from the waitlist. so the first batch of waitlist acceptances are out. i’m waiting on yale. good luck to you guys.

can anyone else confirm that?? ^

^I’m very happy to say that I can! I’m in the west coast and I also got a call today. Good luck everyone :D

congratulations!! what time did they call you? was it on your house phone?

:(…

Congrats! What kinds of material did you send in?

I got accepted off the waitlist!!

@314159
I’m not sure when exactly they called, but they left a message on my cell phone.

Congrats MorganSimone!!

Congrats!!!

I was accepted off the wait list today too! Princeton called my college counselor, who pulled me out of class and I talked the area rep. So now I have to decide! I was so set on Brown and I never thought I would get off the wait-list–I’m still in shock! Best of luck to the rest of you!

To those accepted…what state are you from? Boy or girl? URM by chance?

babykrishma- congratulations!! what time was that at (EST/western?)

I am a girl and a URM from NJ =). And thank you all! A lady from the admissions office called me at noon and I returned the call after school. I was tearing up! Such a perfect ending to a somewhat exhausting day of AP testing lol.

hey babykrishna, congrats on getting into princeton! I had to to choose between Princeton and Brown also, and in the end I just felt like Princeton was a much better fit for me. After you visit you’ll see that the two schools each have their own very distinct personalities and the settings are very different. But of course they’re both excellent schools. best of luck on choosing the best place for you!
