Wait List Experiences

I know there's a large post floating around about how to get off the wait list, but a lot of it is largely focused on WashU. Does anyone have experience with the NU wait list? NU is one of my top choices, and I'd love if anyone could chime in with any insight they have on the process. I planned on doing what I've read about [sending a letter to admissions restating my interest, giving them a packet with new recommendations, etc.]. Does NU often take lots of students off the list? The e-mail stated they have taken anywhere from 0 to 200 in the past five years.

Thanks for your input!

I was accepted off the waitlist for the class of 2010, but i didn't do anything to try and get them to accept me. I just sent in my SIR to another school and agonized over which school to go to when i was accepted off the waitlist. I believe that year there were 10-15 waitlisted students that either were accepted or matriculated (though take that knowledge with a grain of salt, it's just a number i seem to have floating in my head.)

I am on the waitlist too for this year.

"respect your record and interest in NU"

!!!

I'm not still not exactly sure how I feel about being waitlisted.
Best of luck to you all in the same boat.

I got waitlisted too.

I'm not going to wait it out, and I recommend that others don't as well. Take a look at the other colleges that accepted you, and enroll in one of those, and move on (this is actually the advice they give you on the page as well). Northwestern puts your balls in a vice for so long, as they take their sweet time waiting before they give you their admissions decisions. Do you really want to wait until June 30th to see if you got in...with all probability that you will not. 27,000 applicants this year....20,000 last year. There were 15 people who got in from the waitlist last year, so I think the chances are very slim that many get in this year.

For those who are curious, i was notified May 15. I do suggest accepting an offer from another school, since the money you send in with the SIR is a drop in the bucket compared to your typical NU tuition.

cbulla, where'd you get that stat about 15 people? That is not the number I recall.

I strongly doubt only 15 people got in off the waitlist last year. Two people in my (very small) hall alone were waitlisted.

Curious, where'd you get the stats on how many people applied this year?

Here are 2 stats from last year and 2006. Looks like waitlist was 2,700 long and appx 400 were accepted.

this is an old entry (last year) from cc board:

According to an article in the Chicago Sun Times yesterday, so far NU has admitted 400 students from their waitlist this year, almost double the amount they admitted last year.

This an article about waitlisting from last year:

I have a D at NU, she's a sophmore....I have another D that just got waitlisted. Not a good day for the home team, but we will pursue!

i am waitlisted too!! i emailed the admissions lady and she told me that this year she expects to have about 1,000 students on the waitlist...

does it seem like northwestern was especially selective this year, or is it just me??

it was INCREADIBLY selective this year with admission rate around 20% or something...its been just as hard to get into as the top top schools in the nation for the past few years now
